Retired Fire Lieutenant Billy Mills was driving past the home in Bowie when he saw smoke.  Suspecting that a structure was on fire, he pulled over and followed the smoke.  He arrived at the residence just as fire crews showed up to respond to a person trapped inside.

Mills began performing a “360 check” of the house, and found a black lab “frantically scurrying about the backyard,” according to Prince George’s County Fire Department Spokesperson Mark Brady.  When the dog saw Mills coming toward him, he went to the sliding glass doors and barked continuously, looking inside.

Mills peered inside and saw an immobile woman on her hands and knees.  He rushed inside and escorted the woman out into her backyard.  Mills and her neighbor Hugh Owens, a former volunteer fire chief, then brought to the front yard to receive medical attention for smoke inhalation and burn injuries.

Firefighters did their best to contain the flames, but the house has been determined to be unsafe and unlivable.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Though the woman’s injuries were not deemed to be life-threatening, had her loyal dog not alerted Mills, she may have succumbed to smoke inhalation in a moment’s time.

Science Advisor says Badger Cull Plan is a ‘Crazy Scheme’

The Scientist whose Research is being cited by the UK Government to Justify its Plan to Cull (KILL) Badgers in England has described the scheme as “Crazy”.

Lord Krebs spoke to BBC News after the government’s environment advisory body Natural England has issued a culling licence to a consortium of landowners in Gloucestershire.

The cull is intended to control the spread of TB in cattle.

The scientist whose research is being cited by the government to justify its plan to cull badgers in England has described the scheme as “crazy”.

Lord Krebs spoke to BBC News after the government’s environment advisory body Natural England has issued a culling licence to a consortium of landowners in Gloucestershire.

The cull is intended to control the spread of TB in cattle.

Some badgers can carry TB and pass it on to cattle

Some badgers can carry TB and pass it on to cattle

Both groups will then have to show that they can pay for the culling and shoot them in sufficient numbers before full licences are granted. BBC News has been told that these could be issued in three weeks and intensive culling could begin immediately.

The culls will be monitored by an independent group for a period of six weeks. If the body is satisfied that the culls are effective and humane it will advise ministers to continue the trials for four years.

This would pave the way for further applications. Natural England will issue a maximum of 10 licences each year – with future culls.

The culls are intended to reduce TB in cattle by some 16% over nine years in the immediate area. Across England though the effect is much smaller, around 5%.

The aim of the pilot schemes is to assess the effectiveness of the government’s plan to slow down the spread of TB in cattle in England. The Welsh government has opted for a system of vaccination while Scotland is officially TB-free.

Lord Krebs is a respected science adviser to government

The plan is based on the results of a nine-year trial which showed that the spread of the disease could be slowed slightly if more than 70% of badgers in an area could be eradicated. If it was less than 70% – the spread of TB to cattle might even increase.

But the scientist who carried out the study has told BBC News that these pilot studies make no sense.

Lord Krebs, who is one of the government’s most respected scientific advisers, said that the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), which is administering the scheme, has no way of knowing how many badgers there are in the area, so will not know when they’ve killed 70% of the badgers in the area.

“I would go down the vaccination and biosecurity route rather than this crazy scheme that may deliver very small advantage, may deliver none. And it’s very hard to see how Defra are going to collect the crucial data to assess whether it’s worth going ahead with free shooting at all,” he said.

Defra has said that it would be using data from previous studies and would commission its own research to estimate badger numbers.

According to Prof Sir Robert Watson, a former science adviser to Defra, which is overseeing the process, culling alone will not solve the problem.

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson- 'Badger culling alone not a solution'

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson- ‘Badger culling alone not a solution’

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson: ‘Badger culling alone not a solution’

“Culling won’t solve the problem nationally (across England),” he told BBC News in a recent interview.

“But farmers in Devon, Cornwall and Gloucestershire are arguing that it can get between a 16% and 20% reduction which they think is significant and that they are willing to pay for.”

The culls are paid for by local groups of farmers and carried out by private contractors. Prof Watson said that he himself questioned whether the cost of the culls would be economically worthwhile.

“I would say the economics is very close as to whether it is worth it. But the government has made a decision that (it should be tried if farmers are willing to fund it),” he said.

“The question (then) is: ‘Is it a significant effect? Is it cost effective? Is it socially and ethically appropriate?”

The Pilot Areas

  • West Gloucestershire pilot area description: mainly in the county of Gloucestershire, predominantly within the council districts of the Forest of Dean and Tewkesbury, and parts lie within the districts of Wychavon, Malvern Hills and the south east part of the county of Herefordshire. The area does not include the public forest estate in the Forest of Dean.

  • West Somerset pilot area description: located in the county of Somerset. The application area predominantly lies within the council district of West Somerset and part lies within the district of Taunton Deane.

  • Source: Natural England

Animal welfare and wildlife campaigners have opposed the cull, which will allow wild badgers to be shot when they come out at night, but lost their fight in the High Court last week.

Defra says the action is necessary to protect cattle from bovine TB, which leads to the slaughter of thousands of cattle each year.

Defra Minister David Heath said: “Our priority has always been to ensure that any culling of badgers is carried out in a safe, humane and effective way.

“The licence for Gloucestershire issued by Natural England today meets all the strict criteria we imposed, and the pilot in this area will help us assess the effectiveness of controlled shooting before we look at a wider roll out to control the spread of bovine TB in cattle.

“No one wants to kill badgers but the science is clear that we will not get on top of this disease without tackling it in both wildlife and cattle.”

Plans to begin culling in Wales were recently abandoned in favour of a vaccination policy. There are no proposals to cull badgers in Scotland, where TB incidence is low.

Sir David Attenborough in Anti-Badger Cull Christmas Number One Bid

Sir David Attenborough has been enlisted by the producers of a charity single in the battle for the Christmas number one.

The wildlife documentary maker appears in the video for the song, The Present of Life, which is being launched by BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham and is part of a campaign against plans for a Badger Cull.

The video features Packham on drums and weather forecaster Michael Fish on guitar. Rob da Bank, the Radio 1 DJ, also appear in the clip. The song is produced by eco-friendly clothing firm Rapanui.

The single is being sold on iTunes from December 7 to raise money for the Badger Trust, which campaigns against badger culling.

Packham said: “The battle for the coveted Christmas number one spot is always tough but one we are ready for. It will be difficult going up against the X-Factor but we’ll give it a good shot. It would be an amazing achievement.”

Rob Drake-Knight, from eco-friendly clothing firm Rapanui, said: “It was a great coup getting the likes of Chris and David on side. Hopefully they can help us to hit the number one spot and stop the badger cull at the same time.”

Sir David Attenborough

Sir David Attenborough

Sir David, 86, has previously spoken out against a badger cull, saying it could make the problem of cattle disease worse.

The purpose of the planned cull would be to control bovine tuberculosis. Farmers claim badgers spread the cattle disease and want permission to kill the protected woodland species.

But in an interview last year, Sir David said: “You may think culling [badgers] is the answer and it sounds easy to start with but it can very well make things much worse.

“At the moment TB is localised. If you kill all those badgers what happens then? Firstly those survivors will go out and carry the disease to areas that were hitherto unaffected.

“Other badgers slowly colonise and are infected themselves. There is good scientific research available to show culling badgers can make things worse not better.”

Plans for the cull, due to have taken place this year, were postponed until 2013 after more badgers than anticipated were found in two areas selected for pilot trials, in Gloucestershire and Somerset.

Update – On Man Swinging Cat Caught on CCTV

Cat swinging suspect hands himself into police

The RSPCA and Police that were  actively looking to trace the man caught on CCTV swinging the poor defenseless cat around by its tail outside a Pub has handed himself into Police after all the Publicity and Outrage in the Community.

The man suspected of swinging the terrified cat by its tail can now be identified for the first time today as 20-year-old Riain Richards after he handed himself into police.

The Footage showed the animal attacker seemingly dancing down a road in Ramsgate, Kent, with the black cat at arm’s length in scenes of abuse that last for more than 30 seconds At one point a man thought to be an accomplice is struck by the spinning two-year-old cat, whose name is Mowgli.

Owner Michelle Buchanan, an IT teacher from Ramsgate, said: “It’s horrific. I can’t believe anyone would do something that cruel.”

Officers and RSPCA inspectors had identified Richards as a person they wanted to interview in connection with the daylight attack on Mowgli on the streets of Ramsgate, Kent but could not locate him.

Just hours after the 20 year-old was urged to hand himself in, Richards presented himself to Margate police station shortly after 9am on Friday.

He was accompanied by his solicitor after RSCPA inspectors and police officers failed to find him at his home address, just around the corner from where the incident occured.

He is currently being questioned by detectives and animal welfare officers. He has not been charged.

“According to Owner Michelle Buchanan, Mowgli is still distraught. He won’t go out the door. Mowgli escaped the attack without injury. But Ms Buchanan, who lives alone with her two other cats Missy and Milly, believes the incident has affected him.”

A RSPCA spokewoman said: ”The RSPCA can confirm that this morning, a 20-year-old man from Ramsgate voluntarily handed himself into Margate Police Station and is now helping us with our enquiries.

‘The RSPCA said we would like to thank all the media and the public for their help in our appeal following this incident involving a cat being swung by his tail.”

While she declined to comment on the suspect’s identify Protection 4 Animals has established Richards’ identity.

20 Year Old Riain Richards who was caught on CCTV swinging the poor defenseless cat called 'Mowgli' around by its tail outside a Pub has handed himself into Police accompanied by his solicitor

On his personal page on an internet social networking site he says he is a supporter of Arsenal Football Club and he is “always happy” and that his “religion” is “one love one life”. He lists his hobbies as “sport n (sic) raving”.

Mowgli, a two-year-old tom, narrowly escaped injury in the attack at 8.30am on Oct 29 as more than 14 times next to railings and cars, coming within inches of smashing its head on the pavement.

Mowgli’s owner, Michelle Buchanan, urged the public to help catch the man responsible for the “appalling” cruelty.

The attack was captured on a CCTV Camera outside the Camden Arms pub next to Miss Buchanan’s flat, and the footage was handed to the RSPCA by its landlord, Mark Reynolds.

The 17-second clip shows the man, wearing black trousers and a beige top, spinning Mowgli around at least 14 times before going out of shot.

Miss Buchanan, a 43-year-old IT teacher, was at work and did not find out about the attack until she returned to her home in the afternoon.

Richards’ brother stated that he only heard about the incident when he went for a drink in the Camden Arms, Pub late on Thursday. The man, who lives in Margate, said after looking at the CCTV footage: “If it’s him, then he’s an idiot but I don’t know. I can’t get hold of him or my parents. I don’t know where he is.”

Mowgli Now in the safe hands of it's Owner IT Teacher Michelle Buchanan

Miss Buchanan took Mowgli to the vets last night for a check-up amid concerns of internal injury. The RSPCA said that the cat would have “suffered an amount of pain because of the weight put on the tail”.

Miss Buchanan said: “I’m overwhelmed with the support I’ve had. You can imagine what people are saying should be done with those responsible.

“There’s definitely a sense of anger from people. I just feel a bit sorry for Mowgli now. It’s been like he’s had to relive it all.”

One neighbour said they were surprised to hear he was involved in the incident.

She said: “I’ve never known him to be cruel to animals. He’s always been good with my cats.” They said he used to play football in the street when he was a teenager. The house was in darkness on Thursday night.

The RSPCA said it had a “tremendous response” to the appeal for information and added the suspect could be charged with cruelty under the Animal Welfare Act.

A Still Image from CCTV of Richards Swinging 'Mowgli' by it's tail.

Caroline Doe, the local RSPCA inspector stated if convicted the maximum sentence he faces is six months in jail and/ or a fine of up £20,000.

“Caroline Doe went on to say the cat will have suffered with the amount of pain because of the weight put on the tail. It would be quite common for an attack like this to cause serious damage to the tail and it wouldn’t be unexpected for us to find the cat with a tail that is completely useless.”

Mark Reynolds, the landlord of the Camden Arms, said: “It’s been the topic of conversation all day in the pub.

“People here really love their animals and they’re really shocked by the footage.”

A Kent Police spokesman confirmed that officers were involved in the search for the suspect.

The assault echoed an incident in August 2010 when bank worker Mary Bale sparked outrage on social networks after she threw a cat into a bin outside its owners’ home, the 45-year-old had to be given police protection after she was filmed dumping a cat in a wheelie bin near her home in Coventry.

RSPCA official charity logo

Bale, a spinster, received death threats after the CCTV footage of her trapping Lola, a four-year-old tabby, in the bin, was posted on the internet.

She was fined £250 after pleading guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and blamed her actions on “a split second of misjudgement”.

Robot Deer Used To Catch Poachers

Photo Provided by Florida Fish and Wildlife of Robot Deer

SALT LAKE CITY — Nighttime deer poachers beware – that shadowy creature on the side of the road may just be remote-controlled.

State wildlife officials across the country have for several decades been rolling out roadside robot decoys to nab unscrupulous hunters, and the effort has paid off with hundreds of citations.

A robotic deer decoy used in Georgia had to be replaced in 2006 after being shot more than 1,000 times.

“It’s a time of year when some Utahns can’t resist the sight of a big buck on the side of the road – even if shooting hours are over for the day,” said Amy Canning, a spokeswoman for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

Utah’s five DWR regions now each have their own robot decoys, which are deployed in various spots along roadways where deer often gather or where poachers have been a problem in the past.

Hunting is not allowed at night in Utah, starting a half hour after sunset until a half hour before sunrise, but authorities say the sight of a big deer on the side of a road can just be too tempting for some.

Once a plan is in place, authorities put the mechanical deer near a road where it can be seen by passing cars. Then they hide nearby and keep watch, waiting for someone to take the bait, occasionally using the remote control to move the decoy’s head and tail “to make it look as realistic as possible,” said Utah DWR Sgt. Matt Briggs.

“We try to mimic some of the movement that takes place in the field,” he said.

Hunters will generally use headlights to illuminate the deer, then take their shot. It doesn’t matter if it’s a bow and arrow or a rifle – if it’s at night, it’s illegal without special permission, Briggs said.

The shooters in Utah are issued a class B misdemeanor citation, punishable by up to six months in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. Authorities also seize their weapons.

Briggs said he’s seen it all, from bow hunters shooting multiple arrows at the inanimate robot deer, amazed that it’s not going down, to shooters with rifles repeatedly firing shots at the mechanical beast.

“I’ve seen an individual shoot it with a 30-06 (rifle) and couldn’t figure out why it didn’t go down after he hit it five or six times,” Briggs said. “It can be really entertaining.”

Elsewhere, poachers are catching on, and have become wary of shooting from the road not only for fear of arrest, but of the embarrassment that comes along with it, said Lt. Bill Bruce of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. His state’s decoy was effective for about 10 years, but wasn’t deployed last year after it became less useful.

“If somebody gets caught shooting the deer from the road, it ruins their reputation as a hunter,” Bruce said. “Their name goes up on the wall of shame among local hunters.”

Florida officers have also used a robotic deer in all six wildlife regions, said state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman Katie Purcell.

“It’s been successful at catching poachers,” Purcell said. “It’s a tool that officers can take to where the violation is actually happening.”

Raccoon Dogs Skinned Alive in China

Skinned Alive to Make Fake Ugg Boots: Horrific Footage Reveals Slow, Sickening Deaths of Raccoon Dogs.

Captive raccoon dog in a fur farm

Raccoon Dog in Cage waiting to be SKINNED ALIVE

Thousands of unsuspecting Britons may be buying imitation Ugg boots made from the pelts of animals skinned alive. The fur comes from raccoon dogs, a species related to domestic dogs, farmed in China.

A sickening video of the skins being collected has led activists to demand a ban on the trade and call for clearer labelling.

Brutal: Workers in China skin a raccoon dog, but the animal is still alive and suffering

The raccoon dog is indigenous to Asia and related to dogs and foxes.

Ugg boots are made from Australian sheepskin and cost up to £200 – but cheap imitations have flooded the market.

Genuine Ugg boots cost up to £200 and use sheepskin, which is produced in a humane way.

But campaigners have found that other companies in Australia, where the popular boots are made, are using raccoon dog fur farmed in China and labelling it ‘Australian sheepskin’.

Campaigners from Humane Society International (HSI) warned that the footwear could have found its way into the UK.

While the law says that no products using dog or cat fur may be imported or sold in the country, there is no ban on fur from raccoon dogs, an Asian species with links to foxes, dogs and jackals. They are not related to raccoons.

Pitiful: A bloodied and dazed creature is shown still alive but helpless on a pile of corpses.

Agony: A raccoon dog is beaten to stop it struggling so it can be skinned alive.

Wendy Higgins from Humane Society International HSI UK said:

I have been working in animal rights for more than a decade and have never seen a video that has shocked me so much.

‘It is not just the killing of the animals that is horrific, but the fact that they must endure such slow, painful deaths.

‘These animals are not dogs,  so there is no legislative reason why boots containing the fur cannot be imported into the UK. There are also many problems with the labelling of fur products, so many consumers will not be aware of where the fur in their boots comes from.

Websites found by HSI show other companies are selling the fur on gilets, coats and ear-muffs for delivery to the UK.

Ugg Australia denied they were using the fur in their own boots and pointed the finger at cheap copies.

Cruelty: A raccoon dog is beaten on the head in an attempt to stun it. Another dazed animal lies on the right-hand of the image.

Force: A worker stands on an animal’s neck to stop it struggling. The process of skinning the raccoon dogs is agonisingly slow.

WARNING By Clicking on the link below you will see some very upsetting images:

Lena McDonald from Ugg Australia said the use of raccoon dog fur by other companies was tarnishing the entire industry as many people were unable to tell the different brands apart.

She said her company used its own tannery to ensure the standards of its boots, but added that up to 40 products using fur from overseas contained the word ‘ugg’.>

She said: ‘As far as I can see many of these boots are not made in Australia at all yet they have the words Australia and ugg on them. We have seen companies cutting off tags saying “made in China” and putting on a “made in Australia” tag.’

The UK Government announced its ban on importing cat and dog pelts from China in 2001 after it emerged that a fur collar, obtained from a leading store in the West End, contained dog fur.

A total ban on the trade in dog and cat fur came into force across Europe in December 2008.

9 Things To Check Before Buying Ugg Boots

Comment – As difficult as it is was to read about and see these terrible photographs, it is important to get the word out. Most folks who buy these boots are unaware of the cruelty involved. I suggest to all: read the labels on everything you buy– if it’s not manufactured in your home country, don’t buy it. Yes, that’s time consuming and inconvenient. But it’s the only way to avoid fueling this type of cruelty. By buying largely domestic goods, you will also avoid dangerous ingredients (remember the Chinese toothpaste and the melamine in dog food) and support your local economy. – Dianne, Michigan, USA.

Fur Farms in China

A Horrific and Shocking Look Inside Chinese Fur Farms

Animals Skinned Alive

When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms,

they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them.

When workers on these farms begin to

cut the skin and fur from an animal’s leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut.

China Fur Trade Exposed in 60 Seconds

When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals’ heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them.

Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly.

Some of the animals’ hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned.

One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera.

Before animals are skinned alive

  • The Animals are pulled from their cages and thrown to the ground
  • Workers bludgeon the animals with metal rods or slam them on hard surfaces
  • Causing broken bones and convulsions but not always immediate death.
  • Animals watch helplessly as workers make their way down the row.

Background

Undercover investigators from Swiss Animal Protection/EAST International toured fur farms in China’s Hebei Province, and it quickly became clear why outsiders are banned from visiting. There are no penalties for abusing animals on fur farms in China—farmers canhouse and slaughter animals however they see fit. The investigators found horrors beyond their worst imaginings and concluded,

“Conditions on Chinese fur farms make a mockery of the most elementary animal welfare standards. In their lives and their unspeakable deaths, these animals have been denied even the simplest acts of kindness.”

On these farms, foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals pace and shiver in outdoor wire cages, exposed to driving rain, freezing nights, and, at other times, scorching sun. Mother animals, who are driven crazy from rough handling and intense confinement and have nowhere to hide while giving birth, often kill their babies after delivering litters.

Is There a Skeleton In Your Coset?

The globalization of the fur trade has made it impossible to know where fur products come from. China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported for sale in the United States. Even if a fur garment’s label says it was made in a European country, the animals were likely raised and slaughtered elsewhere—possibly on an unregulated Chinese fur farm.

The only way to prevent such unimaginable cruelty is never to wear any fur.

Poisoned Neighbour’s Cats

Gardener Poisoned Neighbour’s Prize Cats for Urinating on Strawberry Patch with Ani-Freeze

A woman gardener poisoned her neighbour’s rare cats by putting out bowls of tuna laced with anti-freeze because she did not like them urinating on her strawberries, a court heard yesterday.

One of Andrew Boyds' twin Abyssinian cats called Nush who was poisoned with anti freeze

Katherine Hall, 57, claimed she just wanted to scare the twin Abyssinians, named Nush and Mr Baz, but they died “in agony” days later.

When police were called to the scene they found the deadly tuna, and a cat-scaring machine, in her garden in the village of Airth in Stirlingshire.

She told Falkirk sheriff court: “I just wanted to scare them. I thought that, like having a bad meal at a restaurant, they wouldn’t come back afterwards.”

Andrew Boyd, 51, said he and his wife Wilma has been extremely upset by the deaths of their five-year-old pets.

The court heard that Mr Baz had been touted as a future champion Abyssinian, and Mr Boyd, who also has three cocker spaniels, paid £23 to his vet in an attempt to save him.

The cat died in October last year and his twin was put down four days later.

Mr Boyd, a wedding photographer, told the court: “Mr Baz came through the cat flap into the home and was sick in the utility room.

“He was then sick later on that day another couple of times and was yowling with stress. He was wobbly and kept falling over.

“He was taken to the local vets, where he was put down at 5am the next morning, and they suspected he’d been poisoned.

“Nush was in bed for most of the time after her brother died, and we assumed it was because she was heartbroken, but when she finally came out on October 4, she wasn’t eating or drinking much.

“She was miaowing in pain and couldn’t get up. Then her legs went, and she was shivering.

“We took her to the vet’s in Stirling, but they quickly noticed how serious the situation was, and said she would have to be put to sleep. I was bawling my eyes out when we were told the news.”

After being told of the vet’s suspicions he went round the neighbourhood and noticed a selection of tubs filled with tuna in Mrs Hall’s garden.

Sgt Michael Matheson said she was initially evasive, but then admitted: “It was me. We’ve spent a lot of money on the garden. I wanted to stop them leaving nasty smells and poo-ing. They did it continuously.

“Our grandchildren liked to eat the fruit, but we had to be careful because of the cats.”

Mrs Hall, who worked for 30 years for her husband’s double glazing company, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering and giving the cats poison.

Sheriff Craig Caldwell ordered her to pay £1,500 compensation but stopped short of imposing a fine or considering community service or a jail sentence. He told her: “I take a dim view of cruelty to animals.”

Mr Boyd said the sentence was too lenient, adding: “I don’t want to see anyone going to jail, but she should have been banned from having animals, and given community service at least.”

China Bear Farms Horrific Conditions

Chinese Doctors To Call For ‘Cruel’ Bear Farms To Be Closed

China’s bear farms, where for decades bile has been extracted from the endangered animals in horrific conditions, have been condemned by eminent Chinese scientists.

On the farms, the bears are milked for their bile through crude holes cut into the abdomen wall and the gall bladder

His conclusions will delight campaigners who for years have fought against the farms and freed hundreds of bears from captivity.

They claim that opposition to the industry is growing as China’s burgeoning middle class become increasingly opposed to such cruelty.

Dr Feng will warn the World Traditional Chinese Medicine Congress conference, however, that opponents face a hard battle with traditionalists who remain convinced that real bear bile can help cure many ailments including stomach and digestive disorders and kidney problems. Many people, including government officials, will refuse to accept substitutes, he will say.

On the farms, the bears – mostly Asiatic Black Bears – are kept in tiny, cramped cages and milked for their bile through crude holes cut into the abdomen wall and the gall bladder.

The wounds are deliberately left open, leaving the bears exposed to infection and disease. They are kept hungry and denied free access to water because this helps produce more bile.

Throughout parts of China, some 10,000 endangered Asiatic black bears are currently housed in tiny, restrictive metal cages where they are systematically 'milked' of bile, a digestive fluid produced in the gallbladder which is believed to have medicinal qualities in some Asian traditions.

The farms are still found in many parts of China and other Asian countries, fuelling poaching and illegal trade in the animals.

Dr Feng’s research shows that herbal alternatives and bile from other animals such as cattle – which can be collected cheaply at abbatoirs – can be more effective than Bear Bile.

He will argue that growing opposition to animal substitutes will mean that, eventually, only plant substitutes will be acceptable.

“The final choice will have to be to use plants to substitute bear bile,” he will tell the conference at Central Hall.

“Completely replacing the real one in chemical compositions is really difficult, but it is possible and we are close to proving the reality which is that the pharmacological effects of the substitute are better than those of the real one.”

Animal welfare campaigners point to growing opposition to the farms inside China. Earlier this year the owner of one of the biggest bear bile farms in China – who also owns a large pharmaceutical company – sparked protests in China when he applied for approval to list his company on a stock exchange.

Another speaker at the conference, Toby Zhang, of the charity Animals Asia, said:

“There has been a groundswell of public opinion against bear bile farming which shows that the Chinese people are increasingly concerned about animal welfare issues. Now even tradtional medicine doctors are advising against the use of bear bile.”

Jill Robinson, the English founder and chief executive of the Animal Asia Foundation Charity, which has a sanctuary for rescued Bears in China, said:

“Bears are dying in droves across the country in conditions that are just as horrendous as they were when we began rescuing bears in 1995. This appalling trade has to end.”

“There are over 54 different herbal alternatives and man-made synthetics that can take their place. No one is going to die from a lack of bear bile.”

In December 2009, 19 of China’s mainland provinces committed to becoming bear farm free. Another province, Shandong, closed its last bear farm in 2010.

But there is growing concern that the bear bile trade is still widespread throughout Asia.

The Chinese government estimates that there are currently between 7,000 and 10,000 bears kept for their bile in China. There are an estimated 16,000 Asiatic bears living in the wild.

A report in May by TRAFFIC, the wildlife monitoring network, found that poaching and illegal trade of bears, “continues unabated”, and on a large scale, mostly in China, but also in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

The most common products on sale were pills and whole bear gall bladders where the bile secreted by the liver is stored.

International trade in the bears, and their parts and derivatives, is prohibited under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The report found that the ban was widely flouted. Domestic trade of bear bile is legal but regulated in China and Japan and illegal in other countries.

Bear bile has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 3,000 years.

Until about 30 years ago, the only way to acquire bear bile was by killing a wild animal and removing its gall bladder. In the early 1980s bear farms began appearing in North Korea and quickly spread to China.

Bears rescued from farms by Animals Asia are found to be suffering from liver cancer, blindness, shattered teeth and ulcerated gums. Contaminated bile from sick bears poses a threat to human health.

The campaign has won support from celebrities including Joanna Lumley, the actress. “Bear farming is a cruel and unnecessary practice,” she said.

“The bears are suffering and dying from liver cancers – and doctors in Asia are now urgently highlighting concerns for those who consume the diseased bile.”

Karen Mok, China’s biggest music star, said: “Animals deserve to live in a world without fear or suffering. We must all help the thousands of bears suffering terrible cruelty.”

Dr Jidong Wu, president of the UK association of traditional chinese medicine at Middlesex university, which prohibits the use of bear bile by its practitioners, said extracting bear bile was “inhumane and unethical” and “against the general principle and law of traditional Chinese medicine which emphasises keeping the balance between mankind and nature.”

UK Stray Dogs Increase

Number of Stray Dogs is on The Rise in The UK

An Average 345 Stray Dogs are Picked up Every Day and More Than One in 20, A Total of 7,571 Dogs, Were Put Down as They Were Unable to be Re-Homed in The UK

More than 120,000 stray dogs were picked up by local authorities in the last 12 months, the highest number in 11 years.

New figures from the Dogs Trust suggest that on average 345 stray dogs are picked up every day. But more than one in 20, a total of 7,571 dogs, were put down as they were unable to be rehomed. The report also says that when dogs and families are reunited the animals are not always wanted back by their owners.

Frustrating

Adam Levy manages a rehoming centre in Canterbury which is full to capacity and has 70 dogs waiting for homes. He says the centres are always full.

“As soon as we’ve got dogs going out we’ve got more dogs booked to come in,” he said. “There is a real pressure because the waiting lists are increasing.”

When asked why he thought the situation was getting worse, Adam Levy said the current economic climate didn’t help.

He said: “Dogs become a bit of a luxury and when people need to cut costs, dogs are one of the first things that go.”

Adam Levy also blamed the idea of seeing a dog as an accessory and the demand for status dogs.

“I think it’s a part of the throwaway culture that we live in,” he admitted. “But when people realise how much commitment is involved to dog ownership they lose interest. “It’s an easy option just to abandon your dog.”

The stray dogs survey suggests the number of dogs put down in the last 12 months has risen by 18% on the previous year. Adam Levy says that many dogs are reunited with their owners but not always wanted back. He says the new figures are frustrating as it goes against everything he is working for.

He said: “That dog never asked to come and live with them. They made that decision.”

Miocrochipping

The Dogs Trust is calling for the government to introduce compulsory microchipping and claims this could save taxpayers about £20 million. Charities say that would encourage people to take responsibility of their dogs and help them identify who is breeding dogs to fight. The Dogs Trust has already begun to offer the microchipping service at their 17 rehoming centres for free. They say rehoming a dog is not as simple as walking in and coming out with a new dog. It can take up to a week to process an adoption.

As soon as we’ve got dogs going out we’ve got more dogs booked to come in. There is a real pressure because waiting lists are increasing – Adam LevyDogs Trust

They say the process is to ensure they match the right dog to the right person.

Harriet Cardwell looks after the dogs brought into the home

After a week of checks and monitoring when they first arrive the dogs are assessed. Some are put down as not all are suitable for rehoming. Harriet Cardwell is a canine carer who looks after stray and unwanted dogs. She feeds, exercises and cleans them.

“It can be hard to see the dogs who are no longer loved,” she said.

“Some are quite nervous when they come in and you just wonder what has happened to them.”

Rise in Stray Dogs found in Northern Ireland

More than nine thousand stray dogs have been found across Northern Ireland in the past year, according to a survey by the Dogs Trust.

The number has risen by 3% since last year. Across the UK, the number of stray dogs is at an 11-year high with an average of 345 picked up each day.

9,000 stray dogs were found in Northern Ireland this year

The charity said the findings highlighted the importance of having dogs micro-chipped. Ronnie Milsopp from the Dogs Trust described the new trend as worrying.

“What we have seen in this survey is that dogs are seen as very much disposable and not as long-term commitments,” he said.

“The Dogs Trust is calling on everyone to get their dogs micro-chipped.”

The charity has set up free micro-chipping at the local veterinary practices across Northern Ireland.

6 Month Old Puppy Tortured

The Puppy That Refused To Die: Maggie May the Lurcher Survives Shocking Torture by Callous Thugs

  • Three ‘Thug’ Mates Admit Horrific Animal Cruelty
  • They Fractured Six-Month-Old’s Neck and Stabbed Her with Potato Peeler
  • But RSPCA Inspector says Maggie May is Happy Now

Shocking Cruelty: Maggie May was left in excruciating pain, but she is much happier now.

She was left for dead when thugs stamped on her head, fractured her neck and stabbed her with a potato peeler before throwing her over a fence.

But today Maggie May the lurcher is finally putting that horrific day behind her after a terrible case of animal cruelty.

She now happily walks on three legs – the sad result of torture at the hands of three callous brutes – but is now safe in a loving new home and amazingly trusting despite her ordeal.

Maggie May’s nightmare began when she was badly injured after being hit by a taxi.

Rather than rush her to a vet, her 18-year-old owner, Kieran Wynn, first tried his own brand of DIY treatment by attempting to patch her up with a splint made from chopsticks, red lace and Sellotape.

Then two friends came round to his home in Ferryhill, County Durham, and decided to finish her off.

Sick pals Kevin Varty and Andrew Painter first tried to kill the six-‑month-old pup by treading on her head and yanking her body, fracturing her neck.

When that failed, and with the puppy in excruciating pain, Painter began repeatedly stabbing her with a potato peeler in a frantic attempt to kill her.

Safe Now: 6 Months Old 3 Legged Maggie May pictured with RSPCA inspector Claire Wilson was left for dead by 3 thugs who stamped on her head, fractured her neck and repeatedly stabbed her with a potato peeler

Then, thinking they had killed her, she was bundled over a fence because they could not be bothered to bury her.

But it was that incompetence that saved her life because she was spotted by a passer-by.

Maggie May, now barely breathing, was taken to the RSPCA who got her the expert veterinary care she so badly needed – yet her recuperation still needed several weeks.

Andrew Painter

Kevin Varty

Justice was in part done when Varty, 43, of Ferryhill, and Painter, 32, of Spennymoor, were both jailed for 18 weeks and banned from keeping animals for life by Newton Aycliffe Magistrates, County Duham, England.

Wynn’s sentence was adjourned until later this month. All three admitted cruelty charges.

RSPCA inspector Claire Wilson said: ‘This is the most horrible and shocking case I have ever had to deal with, but Maggie May has gone through it and come out the other side.

‘She is a happy little dog now.’

Cat Shot Suffers Appalling Injuries

Cat Shot in North Cornwall Suffers ‘Appalling’ Injuries

A cat has suffered “appalling” injuries after being shot by an air rifle at close range in north Cornwall.

Marmie suffered 'appalling' injuries when he was shot by an air rifle

Eleven-month-old Marmie had two limbs shattered in the attack when the pellet hit one of his legs, passed through his stomach and exited through another leg.

His injuries were so severe that it was initially thought he had been hit by a car when he was found by the side of West Down Road, Delabole, last week.

It is hoped Marmie, who had emergency medical treatment, will fully recover.

The feline, who had been missing from home for a week prior to the attack, has now been returned to his family.

‘Horrific incident’

An investigation is under way to try to trace who shot him.

Felicity Cross, animal welfare officer for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), said: “This is a horrific incident where a cat has suffered appalling injuries.

“At first it was thought he had been hit by a car, but when he was examined by a vet it was found that he had been shot – probably at very close range – by an air rifle

“He is a lovely animal and although he isn’t out of the woods yet, we are all hopeful he will make a full recovery.

“We are liaising with local police. I would appeal to anyone with information to please contact me, or the police, if they have heard or witnessed anything.”

Hare Coursing Banned In Northern Ireland

Permanent Ban for Hare Coursing in Northern Ireland

A permanent ban on hare coursing is to come into into effect on Wednesday.

The environment minister announced new legislation banning the practice from 17 August.

A permanent ban has brought an end to hare coursing in Northern Ireland

Hare coursing is the pursuit of a hare by a pair of hunting dogs, often greyhounds, and is common in rural Northern Ireland.

Critics have consistently argued against the cruelty of the sport and it has been illegal on a temporary basis for a number of years.

But now the ban is permanent and makes it an offence to organise, participate or attend a hare coursing event.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood was pleased to see the law formalised.

“Hare coursing events should not take place in a modern, progressive, civilised society. We all have a responsibility to protect our wildlife and certainly I want to do everything in my power to do that,” he said.

“While hare coursing events in Northern Ireland have been prevented for a number of years on a temporary basis, the ban I am introducing is a permanent one and a positive step forward.”

The new legislation is part of the Wildlife and Natural Environment Act, which will become law on 17 August as well.

The Countryside Alliance, which champions rural sports, last year promised to challenge the legislation as it made its way through the assembly.

Irish Hare under threat from ‘European Brown’ Hare

The Irish hare is under threat from the European ‘brown’ hare, according to a study from Queen’s University.

The Irish hare could be under threat from the European hares

The research has found increasing numbers of the brown hare have set up home in mid-Ulster and west Tyrone.
In March 2011, the Assembly voted to outlaw hare coursing in Northern Ireland to protect the future of the Irish hare.

But Dr Neil Reid from Quercus (Queen’s University’s Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science), said: “Our native hare remains vulnerable to another serious threat – that of the invading European hare.”

European hares are found in Britain and continental Europe, but they have been highly successful in invading many countries beyond their native range in south-west Europe and parts of Asia.

There have been many studies on their impact on native species. Dr Reid reviewed these studies to get a clearer picture of how much of a threat the invading species might be to the Irish hare.

‘Hybridising’

The study, published in the international journal Biological Invasions, suggested that European hares exhibit strong competition for habitat space and food resources with native species, most notably other hare species.

It also warns that disease and parasite transmission and climate change may give the invading European hare an edge over our native species.

Dr Reid added: “The Irish hare represents an evolutionary unique lineage, which is restricted to Ireland where it has been present since before the last glacial maximum, making it one of our few native mammal species”.

“Hence, it has been isolated for 30,000-60,000 years. So the discovery that both species are hybridising in the wild is very worrying.”

A panel of experts, from the Lagomorph Specialist Group of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), an authority on threatened species, signed a foreword to accompany the paper.

They described it as an urgent call for further research and the development of a European hare Invasive Species Action Plan and Eradication Strategy.

It was feared that the Irish hare would lose its protection in Northern Ireland after the Environment Committee decided against putting it on a protection schedule last year.

This decision was later reversed.

The protection order began in 2003 when it was discovered that hare numbers had declined. They have since stabilised.

The Irish hare attracted major conservation concern following a sustained population decline in Northern Ireland in the 1980s and 1990s.

If Slaughter Houses and Farm Sheds Had Glass Walls

Appalling Cruelty To Chickens, Turkey’s, Pigs, Pigglets, Cattle, Cows, Calfs, Fish and Dolphins.

Sir Paul McCartney Talks About “If Slaughter Houses  Had Glass Walls We Would All Be – Vegetarian”

Paul McCartney narrates and describes the appauling cruelty carried out on Animals on Farms and in Slaughter Houses. These are the Animals we get our meat from and you will find in any Supermarket, Fast Food Outlet or Farm Shop.

It is widely thought by the majority of people that they are happy to eat meat but don’t actually want to see the animal they are going to eat actually being killed.

When you sit down for your meal which includes meat or fish you don’t begin to think, I wonder how this animal was killed. If we did though, we would probably rightly assume, it was killed humanly. So we are all clear, when we say humanly, we mean killed by a human in the most painless way possible. Which should mean in these times, by adhering to working within the stricktists Guidlines that must be in place including clear rules, regulations on Animal Welfare, the technology, facilities and equipment available, be instant and painless.

The Unthinkable Cruelty is Happening To Animals

But let’s say you knew in order to eat what was in front of you an Animal whether it was a Chicken, Turkey, Pig, Cattle, Cow, Fish or Dolphin had been Terribly Beaten, Horrendously Abused, Unbelievable Pain Inflicted, Housed and Transported in Appalling Conditions, Intolerable Acts of Brutality and if all that was not enough to be Tortured and left for Dead at the point of Slaughter (Being Killed in a Slaughter House).

On farms Animals Suffer the most terrible conditions from birth in which they live, are treated and handled. In the Slaughter House Animals prior to Killing are tortured, abused and handled in the most cruel ways imaginable. At the time of Killing, Animals are not Killed Properly and are left for dead, in other words where the Animal should be Dead it is not. It is left with the most unthinkable, appalling and sickening injuries. These same Animals with Heads hanging off, Guts hanging out they are still Alive in Severley Wounded Writhing in Agony. Animals on Hooks that should be stunned are still freely moving around as their throats are cut and left screaming as they Bleed to Death.

Society Turning a Blind Eye To Animal Cruelty!

Why the people that carry out these acts are not behind bars. Why these Farms are not shut down and farmers prosecuted and Abbatoirs closed the Agriculture Departments, Police, Vets and other Workers are turning a blind eye because many people don’t care, don’t want to know or just don’t know.

If you are one of those people, you have now been given a small insight into what really happens to Animals. This Article began with the words glass walls, well if all farms and slaughter houses had glass walls two things would happen. The first,  Animals would not be treated in such unthinkable ways. The second,  we would be, we would all be Vegaterians.

But these places don’t have glass walls and this is your opportunity to see past these walls and face up to what is going on.

Does China Have Open Door To Tiger and Leopard Skin Trade?

Is China opening the door to the tiger and leopard skin trade?

Beijing refuses to respond to conservationists’ concerns about possible re-opening of trade in tiger and leopard skins.

A lack of transparency means it's not clear whether China is allowing the illegal trade in the skins of tiger and leopard skins. Photograph: Mathieu Belanger/REUTERS

Has China quietly reopened the trade in tiger pelts? The question was posed very publicly on Thursday by the Environmental Investigation Agency, which fears that Beijing may be backtracking on an international pledge to save this critically endangered animal.

In a press release, the conservation group accused the Chinese government of opening up a loophole in the tiger trade ban by allowing commercial breeding centres to register and sell skins.

This is a contentious claim on a crucial subject. China won international kudos for prohibiting the trade in 1993, but it remains the main source of demand for illegal tiger products and is under pressure from commercial breeders to relax controls.

The government has repeatedly re-iterated its commitment to protect the animal and curb illegal sales, most recently at last year’s Tiger Summit in St Petersberg.

But it has been far from forthcoming about its efforts to enforce the ban, verify the legality of tiger products and deal with the huge stockpiles of bones and hides that are accumulating in the country’s massive tiger farms.

Along with the lack of transparency is a problem of trust and either an unwillingness or an inability to communicate with the outside world, as I learned today when I tried to get the government’s response to the Environmental Investigation Agency’s accusations.

As is the norm with Chinese government bodies, the press officer at the State Forestry Administration – which oversees tiger conservation – asked for questions in writing to be faxed to his office. When we called to ask when we could expect a response, he admitted that none would ever be forthcoming because senior officials have given up accepting interviews from foreign journalists on wildlife issues because they feel the reporting is too negative.

Putting aside the long-running argument about foreign media coverage of China, this bodes badly for international efforts to save the tiger, which will not work without a higher degree of transparency, accountability and cooperation both within China and across borders.

It is far from certain that China really has re-opened the tiger trade, but the government needs to spell out its position more clearly. Lets hope delegates at next weeks meeting of the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species have better luck getting straight answers.

What you can do

It’s time Parliament did something about the puppy trade.

The fact that puppies can be sold in pet shops and by vendors trading through the internet and newspaper advertisements is the reason that puppy farms exist. Every major independent organisation involved in animal welfare opposes the principle of puppies being sold as a retail commodity and recommends that puppies should only be purchased direct from a responsible breeder.

The legislation which governs the retail sale of pet animals was introduced 60 years ago and has had only minor amendments since then. When it was introduced there was no internet, no mobile phone network and less than 50% of households had a landline telephone.Five years ago, the Animal Welfare Act 2006 was passed and hailed by Defra as a major step forward which would raise standards in every area. Scotland has its own similar law.

It made the process of introducing secondary legislation to address specific issues relatively straightforward. One of the issues which were supposed to be addressed in this way within five years, at least in England, was the outdated Pet Animals Act 1951. The lack of progress on this matter was highlighted as a concern in the Post Legislative Assessment of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 prepared for the Commons Select Committee overseeing Defra in December 2010.

We think it’s time for all of us who think Caroline Spelman, the Secretary of State for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and her officials have their collective heads buried in the sand, to let our constituency MPs know that we also don’t accept the current position and want to know when the original intentions are going to be put into action.

The British Parliament only has powers to make new regulations for England, but if they do, it will strengthen the case for the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly to follow suit. So even if you live in Scotland or Wales, getting your MP to raise the issue is well worthwhile. We’ve drafted a suggested message which can be emailed to your MP by following the steps below. Subject: The sale of puppies in pet shops and by dealers.

Dear [add preferred mode of address]

I would be grateful for your assistance in raising an issue with the Secretary of State for Environment Food and Rural Affairs.

It is widely acknowledged that puppies sold in pet shops are almost exclusively the product of puppy farms. In addition, there is a substantial trade in puppy farmed dogs conducted by dealers via the internet and local newspaper advertising.

The conditions in which these puppies are bred are appalling. Many of the breeding establishments supplying the trade are in Ireland or operating without a licence in the UK. There is also substantial evidence of a lack of consistency by local authorities in monitoring and enforcing even basic health and welfare standards at UK breeders which have been granted a licence.

Whilst there are some moves towards tightening the licensing regime for breeders in Wales, and hopefully soon in England and Scotland, pet shops and traders are free to buy stock from anyone they wish, regardless of whether the supplier is subject to UK law, or operating illegally.

Every major independent organisation concerned with animal welfare has expressed the view that dogs are not a retail commodity and recommended that puppies should only be purchased direct from a responsible breeder.

The current legislation governing the sale of animals in pet shops, the Pet Animals Act 1951, is now 60 years old. The welfare provisions it makes, which must be met by the conditions imposed by licensing authorities, simply do not reflect current best practice, nor do they cover the retail methods used in the 21st century.

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 made provision for the introduction of secondary legislation to address specific issues. At the time of its introduction, Defra stated that one of the areas it intended to address in this way within 5 years of the Act coming into force was the sale of pet animals.I would like to know when the Secretary of State intends to instruct her officials at Defra to put in motion the process to replace the current outdated legislation and whether it is her intention that the sale of puppies by third parties will be prohibited.

Yours faithfully [Your name] [Your home address]

Subject: Is it wrong to sell puppies in pet shops?

I thought you might be interested in this campaign. If like me, you believe the sale of puppies in pet shops and by dealers is wrong, and even worse, fuels the evil puppy farm trade, would you be prepared to spend about 60 seconds to send a message to those who have the power to do something about it?

When Defra introduced the Animal Welfare Act 2006, they said they intended to use the powers it gave to introduce secondary legislation to replace the current Pet Animals Act 1951, which governs pet shop licensing. So far they have done nothing, although leading welfare organisations have expressed concern. You can add your voice by asking your MP to find out when action will be taken at http://www.puppylovecampaigns.org/whatyoucando.shtml

If you have other friends who might also be willing to join in, please forward this mail to them.

Contact us if you have purchased a sick puppy giving us details of seller. Also contact Trading Standards and the local council who license the seller. Other ways to help are listed below.

Stop Buying Dogs from Puppy Farms

  • Licensed dog breeders
  • Pet shops licensed to sell animals

They should give you the full name and address of these premises, plus for dog breeders, the number of dogs they are licensed to have, and for pet shops, what animals they are licensed to sell.

While writing to them, please also ask the last dates that these premises were inspected and the results of the inspection. You can ask for a copy of the latest inspection report but you must do this under The Freedom Of Information Act.

You can find out details of your local authority here.

Please e-mail this information to us.

2. Watch the Channel 5 puppy farm investigation and forward it to all your friends.

With our help Channel 5 exposed pet shop “Dogs 4 Us”, which has branches in Manchester and Leeds, as retailers of sick puppy farm puppies. See the film here: investigations

There are many pets shops in the UK selling puppies from puppy farms, so long as puppy farmers have this vehicle to sell puppies they will continue to subject dogs to this suffering. Pet shops must be stopped from selling puppies.

3. Join a protest near you – or organise your own

Find out what’s going on in your area by visiting the Puppy Love forum.

These protests have successfully convinced pet shops to stop selling puppies, so please join if you can or organise your own.

4. Raise public awareness in your area

Download posters and fliers to hand out in your area. You can also write to your local paper to explain the issues, ask people to adopt from shelters and ask them to get involved.

5. Support your local animal shelter

They have to deal with the non-stop flow of unwanted animals and need all the help they can get. They are always in need of volunteers and donations so please help if you can.

6. Contact your local MP

Tell them your concerns about dog breeding, puppy farms and the rise of stray dogs in the UK and ask them what they are doing about it.

You can find and send message to your MP here: http://findyourmp.parliament.uk/

Man Jailed After Convicted of Animal Cruelty

Eric Buckley was also banned at Pontypridd Magistrates’ Court from keeping animals for life.

Last month he and his wife Doreen were convicted of animal cruelty, including keeping a pony and goats in their cellar, and breaching previous bans.

The couple, who were living in a former pub in Gilfach Goch, had 24 animals in their cellar, the court was told.

The court heard it was a case of prolonged neglect and the animals had been confiscated.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Buckley earlier on Friday after he initially failed to appear for sentencing.

The pony found in the cellar

His 46-year-old wife had been taken to hospital suffering from chest pains. Her sentencing was adjourned for a week.

They had admitted five charges of causing unnecessary suffering and two for breaching banning orders.

RSPCA inspectors told last month’s hearing at Pontypridd Magistrates’ Court that conditions were some of the worst they had ever seen.

They had already been banned from keeping dogs for 10 years due to animal welfare breaches in 1993.

After more serious breaches in 1995 both were banned from keeping all animals for life.

Monique McKevitt, for Buckley, told the court on Friday the couple had been on the way to court when Mrs Buckley suffered either an angina or a heart attack.

She said she talked to Buckley on the phone that morning while he was outside a hospital accident and emergency unit.

“She was taken in an ambulance this morning to the Royal Gwent Hospital (Newport),” she told the court.

“It is a possible heart attack, a potentially life-threatening condition, and he is extremely worried about her.”

One of the 11 Grey Hounds Found in Unlit Cellar

Several animals were rescued from Eric Buckley’s home in a poor state

But District judge Jill Watkins said: “Apart from the obvious bond between husband and wife, there is no real reason why he should not answer bail.”

The couple previously appeared before magistrates in Kingston upon Thames, where they were living at the time.

RSPCA inspector Nicola Johnston said it was “beyond anything” she had seen before, after finding nine geese, two goats, a pony, as well as 11 dogs and a cat at the property in June 2010.

The charges the couple faced related in particular to four dogs which were found to be suffering flea infestations, ear infections and oral disease.

At one point up to 13 retired racing greyhounds had the run of the property, which they used as a toilet.

Most though were kept in an unlit cellar, which was almost an inch deep in animal waste.

Ms Johnston said when Eric Buckley was approached about the conditions and asked why he kept so many animals, he answered: “Why not?”

Dogs Die in Hot Cars

Don’t Leave Your Dog Alone in a Car.

Dogs die in hot carsIf it’s very warm outside and you’re going out in the car, think very carefully about what you are going to do with your dog. You should never leave a dog alone in a car.

It can get unbearably hot in a car on a sunny day, even when it’s not that warm. In fact, when it’s 22°C/72°F outside, the temperature inside a car can soar to 47°C/117°F within 60 minutes.

Unlike humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool. In a hot stuffy car, dogs can’t cool down – leaving a window open or a sunshield on your windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough. Dogs die in hot cars.

Under the Animal Welfare Act you now have a legal duty to care for your animal and if you put your animal at risk, you could face prosecution. You would also have to live with the fact that your thoughtless action resulted in terrible suffering for your pet.

If you see a dog in a car on a warm day please call the Police on 999. For more information read our FAQ.

Heatstroke – early warning signs

Heatstroke can be fatal. Do everything you can to prevent it.
Some dogs are more prone to heatstroke. For example, dogs with short snouts, fatter or heavily muscled dogs and long-haired breeds, as well as very old or very young dogs. Dogs with certain diseases are more prone to heatstroke, as are dogs on certain medication.

If dogs are unable to reduce their body temperature, they will develop heatstroke. There are some signs to look for:

  • heavy panting
  • profuse salivation
  • a rapid pulse
  • very red gums/tongue
  • lethargy
  • lack of coordination
  • reluctance or inability to rise after collapsing
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • loss of consciousness in extreme circumstances.

Heatstroke – first aid

If your dog shows any symptoms of heatstroke, move him/her to a shaded, cool area and ring your vet for advice immediately. Heatstroke can be fatal and should always be treated as an emergency.

Dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature gradually lowered:

  • Immediately douse your dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock – you could put your dog in a shower and run cool water over him/her, or use a spray filled with cool water and place your dog in the breeze of a fan.
  • Let your dog drink small amounts of cool water.
  • Continue to douse your dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle – never cool your dog so much that he/she begins to shiver.

Once you have cooled your dog down you should take him/her straight to the veterinary surgery.

Top tips for warm weather

  • Your dog should always be able to move into a cooler, ventilated environment if he/she is feeling hot.

  • Never leave your dog alone in a car. If you want to take your dog with you on a car journey, make sure that your destination is dog-friendly – you won’t be able to leave your dog in the car and you don’t want your day out to be ruined!
  • If you have to leave your dog outside, you must provide a cool shady spot where he/she can escape from the sun at all times of the day.
  • Make sure your dog always has a good supply of drinking water, in a weighted bowl that can’t be knocked over. Carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts.
  • Never leave your dog in a glass conservatory or a caravan. Even if it is cloudy when you leave, the sun may come out later in the day and make it unbearably hot.
  • Groom your dog regularly to get rid of excess hair. Give long-coated breeds a haircut at the start of the summer, and later in the season, if necessary.
  • Dogs need exercise – even when it is hot. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather.
  • Dogs can get sunburned too – particularly those with light-coloured noses or light-coloured fur on their ears. Ask your vet for advice on pet-safe sunscreen.

Dog Drowned in River Attached To Heavy Metal Vice.

RSPCA official logoRSPCA Appeal After Drowned Dog Found in River Ouse

The vice that was used to weigh down the dog

RSPCA inspectors said the vice was a heavy duty tradesman’s vice

The body of a drowned dog has been found weighted down in a North Yorkshire river.

The animal was discovered in the River Ouse near Overton by staff from the RSPCA in York on Tuesday.

Officers described the male Staffordshire bull terrier cross as elderly, of a creamy colour with a docked tail.

The dog was found in the water, attached to a canvas bag containing a heavy duty metal vice.

Insp Gill Corder said: “The vice was extremely heavy and we think it was used to pull this poor animal under the water and drown him.

“It would have been a horrible way to die, and whoever did this is guilty of vile and completely unnecessary cruelty.”

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the RSPCA.

China Orders 30,000 Pet Dogs Killed

Cull of 30,000 pet dogs ordered after deadly rabies outbreak in Chinese City.

Dogs in Jiangmen to be seized and put down to improve sanitation but experts brand plan unscientific and inhumane.

A southern Chinese city has banned pet dogs, leaving tens of thousands facing a cull unless they can find new homes. Authorities in Jiangmen, August will be seized or killed, city officials say. Guard dogs will be allowed, but only for companies with property worth at least 5m yuan (£474,000).

The Jiangmen Daily said officials aimed to “prevent and control rabies, maintain public order and sanitation, and create a sound environment for the people”. The newspaper added that 42 of the city’s 4 million residents had died from rabies in the past three years.

“Dogs found with diseases will be euthanised in a humanitarian manner. We will sign agreements with owners before putting down their dogs,”Li Wantong, technology director at an animal disease control centre in Jiangmen, told the there is growing interest in animal rights, particularly among the middle class.

“This [ban] is not scientific, not humane, and it will not last long. In short term, maybe it could be effective, but after that, people still want to keep dogs,” said Dr Tang Qing of the National Institute for Viral Disease Control and Prevention at China‘s Centre for Disease Control. “People won’t accept it and implementing it will be difficult – you can’t break down doors to seize and kill dogs.”

He added that a vaccination programme for dogs would be cheaper and more effective.

China has the world’s second-highest death toll from rabies after India, with cases rising sharply in the past decade, possibly due to increasing pet ownership and rising healthcare costs.

The health ministry says 3,300 people died of the disease in 2007, although the toll fell to 2,466 in 2008 and experts believe the worst may be over.

A 2009 ministry report said only a fifth of China’s 75m dogs were vaccinated against the disease. International Fund for Animal Welfare in China, said: “Decades of research internationally have shown culling is absolutely ineffective in controlling rabies – the only way to control it is through mass vaccination. The second reason that [officials] do it is because people are not taking care of their animals … causing nuisance. That requires education.”

In several cases tightened dog ownership rules have led people to abandon pets, resulting in a large stray population that potentially causes more problems.

Two years ago, Hanzhong in Shaanxi enraged animal lovers by announcing it had culled 36,000 stray and pet dogs.

Pregnant Cat Dumped in Bin, Intestines Hanging Out

A Pregnant Cat was Found Dumped in a Bin with it’s Intestines Hanging Out; A Miracle Story of Survival Against All The Odds

Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The RSPCA is trying to trace the owners of a Cat who was found by a member of the public dumped in a wheelie bin in Merthyr Tydfil with severe injuries.

As well as the shocking adnominal injury which had left her intestines hanging out, the young tortoiseshell cat also had serious lacerations to her tail.

The Cat – who has since been dubbed Hope – was otherwise in good body condition and had a pink leopard print collar with a bell but was not microchipped.

The RSPCA believes she may have been injured and then deliberately dumped in Lupin Close, Merthyr Tydfil, on or around 9 April.

“The person who found the poor cat only discovered her because they heard her miaowing. It is amazing she still had the strength to cry, as she was so badly injured she couldn’t even move,” said RSPCA inspector Sian Burton.

“There is no doubt this cat will have suffered extreme pain and distress. To be so badly injured and then dumped in the dark and left to die. It is just awful.

Cat with Intestines Hanging Out

“Her poor owners may be searching for her, and don’t know what’s happened,” she added.

The cat was taken to a vets in Newport, where she underwent emergency treatment, including amputating part of her tail.

While at the vets, they also discovered the poor cat was pregnant. Thanks to swift work by the vets they have managed to keep the kittens in their mum’s tummy, where they seem to be doing well despite the ordeal.

So far she seems to be responding well and it is hoped she may make a full recovery.

The RSPCA is now hoping to trace the cat’s owner, as well as appeal for witness who may have seen what happened to her.

Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal can be prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act and could face up to six months in prison and/ or a fine of up to £20,000.

Today’s War Horse: The War On Horses By The Barbi Twins

Today's War Horse: The War On Horses By The Barbi Twins

Today’s War Horse: The War On Horses By Shane and Sia The Barbi Twins

Horses are as symbolic as the country they built, America. It is a shame we don’t give them the respect they have earned. For centuries, horses shed their blood to give their service to us. It says a lot when a country has better laws for its flag (that doesn’t have a spine or feel pain), then it does for the horses. Horse slaughter and the wild-horse round ups have been the buzz in the media recently. Here are the common questions and facts about horse slaughter and wild horse round-up controversies.

Why is there an uproar about horses being slaughtered or abused more than other livestock animals?

Horses weren’t bred for human consumption; they were bred and domesticated to be companion animals like a dog or cat. They also helped build our country by working the farms, providing transport and even risking their lives in our battles.  In 1971, Congress voted to protect our wild horses with a special a special law.  They tasked the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with the responsibility.  Sadly, the BLM was the very agency that had been killing the horses they were asked to protect.

Does horse slaughter help our economy?

Actually, American tax dollars are used to support these foreign owned slaughter houses.  We are paying to provide inspections on meat that goes overseas. This is a big government merging with big business for profit. They hide this greed in the disguise of compassion by insisting slaughter is humane. The ringleader of pro-slaughter advocates recites her facts (propaganda) from an inconsistent and inaccurate GAO (Government Accounting Office) report.  Horse slaughter is a good profit business for foreign owned companies, as horsemeat goes for as much as $40/lb.

Common Confusion… If Congress unanimously voted in 1971 for the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) to be the government agency that protects wild horses, then why does the BLM insist on deadly round-ups? They end up harming the horses and not protecting them and all with tax payers’ money?

What tax payers didn’t know is that the BLM is made up of cattlemen, not horse advocates. The BLM was originally behind eradicating the horses.  They have always wanted to replace wild horses with cattle on the horses land. So why did the government put the BLM in charge of “protecting” the wild horses? Profit disguised as compassion once again by our government merging with big business and making a worse monopoly which leaves the tax payers left with the bill! The wild horses are slowly going extinct. There were 2,000,000 in 1900 and today we can only approximate to 20,000 in 10 western states. The cattle and oil rigs are now replacing the horses.

What is inhumane about slaughter and wild horse round-ups?

Both slaughter and wild horse round-ups are blatant animal cruelty. The helicopter round-ups spook the horses so they end up badly injured or trampled to death. Many times pregnant horses abort foals in these stampedes.  The remaining horses usually die from extreme neglect (hunger, thirst, overcrowding) in the inhumane holding pens. Ironically, this was the very excuse the BLM used to round-up the horses in the first place! Then the horses may be “adopted” by 3rd party kill buyers for slaughter even though it is illegal to slaughter a wild horse. The loading and transport of horses is also animal abuse. Any horse expert can tell you it’s harder on a horse than other livestock, whether it’s in the next city or across the border. Transporters stuff the horses in trailers way to small, without water, food or rest. This is pure brutality as many transporters admit.

One thing is for sure, slaughter is slaughter, and whether it’s done on US soil or foreign soil, it is animal abuse and cruelty. Horses brains are further back in the head which makes it harder to find, thus making shooting or killing the horses much more difficult than any other livestock. Horses sometimes have to be shot three to five times and throats slit to prevent screaming. There is proof that while carving into the horses many are still conscious. There is nothing humane about slaughter and it’s impossible to enforce it, as Dr. Temple Grandin, humane slaughter expert, even admitted. There are very few USDA laws to protect the horses and they are rarely enforced. “Humane slaughter” is an oxymoron.

Why should everyone care about horse slaughter bill passing?

For those who don’t care about horses, you should care your taxes are wasted on this, much more than the myth that this creates jobs. For those who were told that horse meat is better for you, they haven’t heard about the toxic warnings, dangerous drugs and medicines used in the horse industry. These are also hidden from the commercial market. Horses were not bred for eating!

What about the unwanted or abandoned horses?

Well just like with dogs and cats, it becomes the owner’s responsibility once we outlaw slaughter. This is a whole different animal issue, which is not solved with animal cruelty of horse slaughter. Moreover, the horse slaughter business only wants healthy horses.  A USDA study said that 92% of slaughter horses are in good condition.  Many victims of horse theft or horse fraud complain they have found that their horses had gone to slaughter. This is because kill buyers seek healthy, young horses in order to sell better quality meat. Many of the so-called abandoned horses were ironically from the horse killers themselves leaving behind the sickly horses at the borders that weren’t good enough for horsemeat.

Who is the blame for the abandoned horses?

The abandoned horses are not the problem; it is only a decoy from the truth. The real problem comes from the breeders and the breeder supporters who encourage incentives for the breeding of as many horses as possible. This is specifically true of Quarter horse breeders who are using artificial insemination. They promote slaughter as a dumping ground which opens a huge window of business for more breeding. By the way, most of the “abandoned” horses are Quarter horses which tell you right there what “their” agenda is!

What can we do?

First of all get the facts straight and don’t buy into the propaganda being spewed by pro-slaughter pitches or the clever BLM claims disguised as facts. Remember the BLM is just cattlemen with an agenda to replace the horses with cattle, gold or an oil pipeline. Then spread this factual information.

Right now there is a perfect “one stop solution” to end this all….a bill before the US Congress that stops all horse slaughter  in the US and stops all transport of American horses for slaughter to any foreign country. This bill is called the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This bill was originally drafted in 2001 and introduced to Congress in 2002 by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), who has led this national effort for ten years. Chris Heyde, from AWI, worked tirelessly on state laws to shut down the three U.S. slaughter houses in 2007; two in Texas and one in Illinois. However, the ultimate goal is passage of a federal bill that will prevent any new plants from opening and will prevent American horses from being shipped to Mexico or Canada for slaughter.

Now the horses need your help. We have the power to end this permanently. All you have to do is call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senators and Representative. Then tell them you are pro-horse and urge them to help pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 2966 and S. 1176) today! You can find out who your legislators are by visiting AWI’s Compassion Index at www.compassionindex.org.  Even more effective than a call, you can go to your elected officials’ local town hall and urge them to support these bills face to face.  Because this year is election year, your representatives are eager to hear what you want. We have the power with our vote, but also because it is election year. Congress closes early this year, so we have to act quickly. Barbi Twins Media Blog

Sick Comic Relief Asks, Save or Kill Pig To Raise Money!

Sickening – Lily Allen Offers Her Fans The Chance To Save or Kill A Pig For Comic Relief

Lily Allen used MySpace to first promote her music, eventually bagging a record contract after over a million people listened to her tracks. Her first album, Alright, Still, earned her nominations at the Grammys, Brits and MTV Video Awards.

Her second album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, marked a new direction for the singer, with tracks like The Fear having a more electropop edge. Allen had a brief spell on television, signing a one-series contract to present her own show, Lily Allen And Friends, and making a cameo appearance in Neighbours.

She also became a fashion darling, befriending Kate Moss and working with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. Famous for speaking her mind, Allen has had public spats with Cheryl ColeElton John and showbiz editor Dan Wootton. In 2009, Allen announced she had no plans to make a further album, and opened a clothing ‘Lucy In Disguise’ with her sister in September 2010.

Lily Allen has taken to Twitter with an unusual fundraising request of her followers, in aid of this month’s Comic Relief, asking her followers whether to decide to if a Pig Should LIVE or DIE!!!!!

Doing her bit to help raise the finds, Allen asked her followers whether they wanted to save or kill one of her pigs.

Tweeting to her 4 million followers on the site, Allen posted:

“I will name one of my pigs after you and send you the sausages and bacon from it when I kill it. JOIN my #twittermillion team . Please [sic].”

She continued: “Or if you’re a vegetarian you can choose to spare the pig . #twittermillion JOIN MY TEAM !!!!”

Throughout the evening, she repeatedly urged her followers to donate to the cause, writing: “The highest bidder on my #twittermillion page will get a pig named after them and bacon from it when it’s killed.or the choice to spare it.”

The Not Fair hitmaker then changed her mind, saying that one donor would be picked at random to save or slaughter the pig.

Rounding off her fundraising for the evening, the singer ended with two final tweets, one containing the hashtag “#SAVETHEPIG” and the other “#DONTSAVETHEPIG“; both with links to her Twitter Million page in which people can donate money for Red Nose Day.

District Judge Roy Anderson told White he was sentencing him on the basis the Hamster Died minutes before, when the defendant was handling it.

The hamster was found to have died from heart failure

Selby Magistrates’ Court heard White had drunk so much in his flat in York he was “on the point of madness” and could not remember what happened.

The judge said “it was clear the hamster did not die from natural causes”.

James White, who is studying International Relations and Politics at York University, changed his plea to guilty on Thursday on the basis that his Rough Handling of the Hamster Killed It, before he put it in the  Frying Pan.

District Judge Anderson said: “By virtue of your treatment of this small, unfortunate Hamster you have destroyed your good character and acquired a criminal conviction”.

“It’s accepted now, that there was Rough Handling of that Hamster, but that it could not be established, that it could not be proven, that putting the Hamster, in the Frying Pan and Applying Heat, had caused the Hamster Death.

Judge Anderson continued, “Had it been proven, that Sadistic Conduct, had been established, I would be dealing with you in a far more serious way, than I am.”

White was also Banned from Keeping Animals for Eight Years and ordered to pay £1,000 costs.

Phil Brown, Prosecuting, told the Court, The Police were called to a block of flats on February 2, 2013.

When Police Officers arrived they found White extremely Drunk and there was a “Strong and Pungent Smell” and there was a “Frying Pan next to the hob with a hamster in it”.

According to the Phil Brown, Prosecutor, James White told the Police Officers, I FUCKING Fried It?, I Fried It.

The court heard the Hamster, which belonged to James White’s flatmate, Died from Heart Failure.

Kevin Blount, Defending, said “the Hamster’s Death was the result of “A Drunken Foolishness” and there was “No Deliberate Intent”.

Protection 4 Animals – Cold Weather Safety for Your Dog

Protection 4 Animals – Cold Weather Safety for Your Dog, Make Sure Their Safe and Warm for Winter.

If you live in a region where the winters are cold, then you probably have a yearly routine to prepare yourself for the season change. You might change out your wardrobe, get your car ready for winter, and insulate your home. Don’t forget to take precautions to keep your dog warm and healthy. There are plenty of winter hazards out there, such as antifreeze and ice. Take steps to keep your dog safe! Here are some cold weather tips to you and your dog this winter:

Do not leave your dog outside unsupervised without a heated shelter. Just because your dog has fur, it does not mean he can withstand the cold. Though some dog breeds (like Huskies and Malamutes) are better suited to cold weather, all dogs should have access to a warm shelter at all times. Most dogs do best living indoors. However, if your dog must live outdoors, provide a heated dog bed and adequate shelter.

Small dogs or those with little to no hair should have sweaters or jackets for protection against the cold. Some of the most common breeds that will benefit from protective clothing are Chihuahuas Miniature Pinschers Whippets and Greyhounds. Remember, not all dogs will tolerate clothing, so don’t push it – just make an extra effort to keep them out of the cold. Keep food and water in a place where they will not freeze – preferably inside! A heated dog bowl can help outdoor water and food from freezing.

Watch those feet! If your dog will tolerate it, consider foot protection booties. This can keep your dog’s feet safe from harm, such as dangerous objects hidden by the snow or salt on roads and walk ways. Additionally, booties can help give your dog a better grip and prevent slipping on ice.

Dog in Winter Snow

Dog in Winter Snow

When walking your dog near ice, use extra caution to avoid slipping. Always keep a close watch your dog and be sure he says nearby. Do not allow your dog to run across frozen bodies of water – he could fall into icy water if the ice is too thin!

If you use an indoor or outdoor fireplace, always keep a safety guard around it in order to protect your dog away from the flames and soot. Do not leave a fire unattended.

If your dog is in the cold and begins excessively shaking or shivering, get him back to warm shelter as soon as possible. If you suspect your dog is developing hypothermia, bring him to a vet immediately.

Avoid letting your dog eat snow or anything else on the ground. Dangerous objects or chemicals may be hidden in the snow. Also, eating snow this can cause stomach upset and even hypothermia. Always keep fresh room temperature water available at all times.

Beware antifreeze – It is highly toxic! Antifreeze tastes good to pets, but even a small amount can kill your dog. Though exposure to antifreeze is a risk all year, the risk is especially high during the colder months. Keep your eyes on your dog at all times – and keep antifreeze out of reach. If you suspect your dog has had ANY exposure to antifreeze, get to a vet right away.

In general, be sure to contact your vet if any abnormal behavior or signs of illness appear. Also, have a look at the cold weather checklist from the Veterinary Medicine guide.

Did you know that your dog’s normal temperature is a few degrees higher than yours? Winter is the perfect time of year to snuggle up – so have fun and stay warm!

James Backus – Cat’s Killing Leads To Cohoes, Albany, New York, USA Man’s Arrest

ALBANY, NEW YORK — A Cohoes man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly killed a cat by slamming its head into the sidewalk along South Pearl Street.

James Backus, 44, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty following an investigation that began after officers were told by another person that Backus had just killed a cat near the intersection of South Pearl and State streets, Albany Police spokesman Steven Smith said.

He said Backus allegedly picked up the cat by the tail and struck its head against the concrete four or five times. Backus then placed the cat, which was allegedly lying injured in the road after being hit by a car, in a city garbage can, Smith said.

Backus was arraigned Wednesday in city court and bail was set at $15,000, but a city court judge released Backus on his own recognizance.

Beloved Police Dog Passes Away On New Year’s Day

A Beloved Police Dog has passed away just 12 days into his retirement, leaving his partner of 7 years heartbroken.  ‘Hondo‘, a beautiful German Shepherd who worked with Vancouver Police Constable Sandra Glendinning, passed away on Tuesday afternoon.

VANCOUVER, BC.: Jan. 2, 2013 – Vancouver Police Service Dog Hondo died Jan. 1. He was the partner of Const. VANCOUVER, BC.: Jan. 2, 2013 – Vancouver Police Service Dog Hondo died Jan. 1. He was the partner of Const. Hondo‘ had his share of health problems, but they never slowed him down much and he always came back to work ready to serve.

In 2010 he had a near fatal immune disease and he had surgery in November to remove his spleen.  The spleen had a cancerous tumour and the vet warned that when the cancer came back it would be aggressive, but Glendinning didn’t expect it this soon after he retired.

Hondo’s getting on, and it’s time for him to enjoy a very well-deserved retirement. He’s ready to crash out on the big fluffy dog bed in front of our fireplace, and to being self-assigned the job of keeping starlings off the bird feeders in our back yard,” she wrote in her blog recently.

On Monday they went for a walk together and Hondo was his usual enthusiastic self.

But on Tuesday that changed she wrote, “Hondo was propped on his forelegs, labouring for breath. It was clear he had suffered a catastrophic setback — he made a soft cry with every breath. It was time.  My dear, sweet dog, my faithful partner since 2005 was leaving me.”

Police Dogs and their handlers grow very close as they both live and work together and trust each other with their lives every day, so for Glendinning it is like losing a member of her family.

Hondo was a treasured member of the department who loved to chase bad guys and track scents, and will remembered for his devotion both to his job and his partner.

Couple Arrested For Animal Cruelty and Child Abuse

Couple Jeff O’Neil and Jennifer Kovacs Arrested For 300 Counts of Animal Cruelty and Child Abuse.

OLDSMAR, Florida USA  – A woman who shared her home with 300 Animals, which the Tampa Bay SPCA took away Sunday 6th January 2013, is reacting to the incident.

Joyce Kovacs said she is glad the Animals are gone.

They belonged to her daughter, Jennifer, and her daughter’s boyfriend, Jeffrey O’Neil, who lived with Joyce.

Jeff O’Neil and Jennifer Kovacs were arrested for Child Abuse and Animal Cruelty.

“I’m kind of devastated, you know. I guess I feel bad for Jennifer and Jeff that they’re sitting in jail, and yet they brought this all on themselves,” said Joyce.

Animals — including snakes, lizards, and rats — were taken from the home along the 200 block of Lee Street after deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call there about a missing infant.

Joyce said it was the couple’s daughter, who a relative had come and taken away. According to deputies, a family member came to the house, saw the Child was Crying, but couldn’t wake O’Neil. The relative left a note, which Jennifer and O’Neil didn’t see.

That’s when deputies saw all the Animals being held in 88 Cages. They described the home as being in ” Deplorable Conditions.”.

Some Animals were even found ‘Dead’ and ‘Half Eaten by the Other Animals’.

According to Deputies, they were being Bred and Sold without the Proper Licensing and Conditions.

The SPCA Tampa Bay was called and they took all of the 300 Animals.

Joyce said her daughter and O’Neil sold some of the Animals at flea markets or over the Internet, but the breeding got out of control. She added it’s been that way for the past year.

She said she told Jennifer and O’Neil they would have to leave the house soon, just recently. Joyce said she put up with it for so long for the sake of her granddaughter, because the couple had nowhere else to go.

All of the Animals are in the care of Tampa Bay SPCA now.

According to the organisation, they will try to get the owners to sign the Animals over to them. If not, the SPCA will have to file for custody.

Brian May: Me and My Animal Passions

He is one the World’s Best Guitarists

He’s written some of the most memorable rock anthems of all time, and his band ‘Queen’ is a Global Phenomenon. But it’s not music he wants to be remembered for his Animal Welfare Work – Saving Badgers and Foxes.

Brian May: ‘The day the first shot is fired against the Badgers, I will never drink another drop of milk unless I know it’s come from a humane farm.’

When Queen performed at the closing ceremony of the Olympics – Freddie Mercury, towering over the crowd in canary-yellow jacket, leading a call-and-response from beyond the grave, Brian May, crowned in his wonky halo of grey curls, squalling his way through the guitar solo from Brighton Rock, and drummer Roger Taylor, with guest Jessie J, thundering into a rendition of We Will Rock You – they did what they always managed to do so spectacularly live: unite a stadium in belting out an anthem.

Brian May, guitarist of the British rock band Queen, performs during the Closing Ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, in London.

Brian May, Guitarist and Roger Taylor, Drummer of the British Rock Band ‘Queen’, performs during the Closing Ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Sunday, 12th August 2012, in London.

They – well May – also managed to do something new: infuriate a significant percentage of the populace. The trouble was his outfit: a characteristic combination of dark trousers, trainers and long frock coat, except from one sleeve peered the head of a fox; from the other, the black and white snout of a badger.

“He’s politicising the Olympics!” came the cry, from those who made the connection between his attire and his campaign against the government’s then imminent approval of pilot badger culls in Gloucester and Somerset.

“To the farmers struggling against bovine TB and Fox predation,” harrumphed the Countryside Alliance, “a millionaire rock star using a global sporting celebration to undermine their way of life really stuck in the craw.”

A spokesperson for Brian May said his jacket was in keeping with Danny Boyle’s Isles of Wonder theme, including, as it did, a hedgehog, a buzzard, two herons and an adder, “most of which are protected or in decline” – which was plausible, up to a point.

Director Danny Boyle was the mastermind behind the London Olympic 2012 Opening and Closing Ceremony's

For it is true that Brian May is on a mission.

“All the available scientific evidence points to the fact that the cull probably will not work,” he says now, sitting in a hotel bar in Kensington.”

“It will not save a single cow. It might do, but it’s a huge unknown – a huge extrapolation, and extrapolation of scientific evidence is a very dangerous game.”

His voice is soft, languid in the way of someone accustomed to being listened to.

“If you talk to any expert on cows and bovine TB in Britain, bar a couple who work for Defra [Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs], you will get the same answer, including from Lord Krebs.”

Krebs led the only major scientific trial of culling, a £50m study known as the randomised Badger Culling or Krebs trial, which culled 11,000 Badgers over Five Years and found that if certain conditions were met, culling could reduce disease incidence by an average of just 16% over nine years.

“Krebs said Culling is a crazy idea, we should not be doing it, we should be vaccinating,” adds May. “So I’m not a lone voice. I’m not a renegade hippy.”

On Friday afternoon, a petition he has launched with Team Badger, a coalition of various Animal Rights Groups, had more than 134,000 signatures, well in excess of the 100,000 required to get a debate considered in parliament.

(The coalition includes Brian May’s own anti-animal cruelty organisation, established when he realised, in 2010, that David Cameron would try to repeal the anti-hunting act. It is called, with the unapologetic sentimentality that imbues the songs he wrote for Queen, Save Me, and marked the end of his life-long support for the Tory party.)

British Prime Minister David Cameron will try to Repeal the Anti-Hunting Act

British Prime Minister David Cameron will try to Repeal the Anti-Hunting Act

May is working on the campaign around the clock, talking to scientists, emailing activists, doing interviews, updating his website.

“It’s threatening my life, it’s utterly consuming my life. It makes it difficult to continue a proper family life, it makes it difficult to continue music, to continue astronomy, to continue my stereoscopic adventures.”

May is, famously, unusual in the rock firmament in that he possesses a PhD in astronomy, and has written books about it (the most recent, The Cosmic Tourist, written with Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott, will be published next month) and another obsession, stereoscopy.

“So I suppose I solve the problem by not sleeping very much.” He says his friends, largely, support his campaign, but that his wife, Anita Dobson – though helping with the petition, “has at times made me question whether I should be spending this much time on it”.

As we talk, his eye is suddenly caught by a scene behind us, and his voice hardens. “Sorry, excuse me, are you having trouble, Anne?” Anne is Anne Brummer, of Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue Centre in Surrey, who has rescued thousands of Animals over the past 25 years and has released many of them on to his land. A waiter has been trying to explain to Anne that the bar is not yet open. “Who says? Can we talk to your manager please?” The gentle tone is suddenly gone; in its place is the full force of rock star high-handedness.

Ann Brummer goes out on most of the rescues herself and also carries out educational work

Ann Brummer goes out on most of the rescues herself and also carries out educational work

He turns back to me. “Sorry, I hate people who say things can’t be done.” His tone is avuncular again, expansive. “It must be in my upbringing.” In what way? “Well, my parents thought we were middle class”

Brian’s father, when May was a teenager helped him build the guitar he still uses out of motorbike valve springs, a mahogany fireplace, a bike saddle, and mother-of-pearl buttons from his mother’s button box, was an electronics draughtsman in the civil service –

“but we were very poor. They had a pride in doing things well. Life is too short for people who don’t want to do their job well.”

Speaking of jobs, it’s understandable, isn’t it, if farmers feel that it is all very well for someone in a comfortable position …

“I’m not in a comfortable position,” interjects May. “This is killing me!”

I look for a trace of irony, but it doesn’t appear to be there.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Rock stars shouldn’t have anything to say about farming. Well, sorry, it’s time to wake up. Farming, like every other industry, including mine, has to be open to change or it dies. … [And] if the price of my glass of milk on the table, or my cheese is the death of possibly hundreds of thousands of badgers, I don’t want it. I like me milk, I like me cheese, but the day the first shot is fired by the government against the badgers, I will never drink another drop of milk unless I know it’s come from a humane farm.”

Cow, Milk, Cheese and Farmer

Cow, Milk, Cheese  and Farmer

But that, as even some Anti-Cull Activists admit, is just punishing farmers further.

“No, it’s not. It’s giving people the right to choose who to support.”

What is it about him and animals, exactly? Where does this passion come from?

“It’s a childhood thing, but it’s been reinforced by the life I’ve led. I’m an astronomer.”

Even when he was touring the world with Queen, May kept up with the academic journals. He has an asteroid named after him, has spent months chasing eclipses from Mexico to Outer Mongolia, and periodically appears on the Sky at Night with his friend Patrick Moore.

“For a thousand years the Ptolemaic system was believed all round the world. The system says that the Earth is at the centre of the universe. It turns out not to be true. But this idea that we are the centre of creation lingers on – where is the justification to say we are the central piece of evolution? There is nothing to tell us that whatsoever. So why would we use that to justify our exceedingly bad behaviour?”

In fact, he said, a couple of years ago, that he would rather be remembered for his animal rights work than for music or astronomy. Really? “Yep. I won’t be remembered in 1,000 years anyway, but I would like to leave this planet knowing that I did what I could to make it a better place, a more decent place, a more compassionate place.”

Having said which, he doesn’t seem to find this campaigning lark that fulfilling.

“People say: ‘Are you enjoying it?’ No. I love my music, I love my art. And I’m quite good at it.”

Rolling Stone last year ranked him as 26th of the 100 best guitarists of all time.

“So really I should be making music – I have to have time – because if I lose music from my life, I lose my self.”

He is about to embark on a short tour with Kelly Ellis, accompanying her on acoustic guitar and performing by candlelight.

“It’s almost like a reaction to the music that made Queen famous, though if you look at it some of it’s very simple. We Will Rock You is very simple. Millionaire Waltz is highly complex.”

It is perhaps instructive – or maybe not – that May wrote We Will Rock You, while Freddie Mercury wrote The Millionaire Waltz: for all his obvious intelligence, there is something of the emotional bludgeon about May and his lyrics: they are obviously wildly effective – in 2006, Queen’s Greatest Hits became the best-selling album ever – but relatively uncomplicated (unlike his guitar solos): We Will Rock You. The Show Must Go On. I Want It All.

Musically, he and Freddie Mercury dovetailed brilliantly, but did he ever feel overshadowed and resentful of his flamboyantly gifted frontman? “No, we actually pushed him forward. It was me who designed that first cover and put him on [it]. That was my vision of what Queen’s image would be. Because Freddie was born to it. Though he was very democratic. People often said, in interviews, ‘This is your band’ – and he’d say, ‘Don’t be stupid, darling.'” May’s voice alters subtly, suddenly there’s another person in the room.

“This is a band.”

Queen's Freddie Mercury

Queen’s Freddie Mercury

What was it like, performing with Mercury again, albeit in the form of a hologram?

“It was nice. I mean, Freddie’s with us the whole time, really. Freddie’s spirit is very strong and we spent so much of our lives together, I can’t imagine a day where I wouldn’t refer to him in some way. I’m very comfortable with that now. I wasn’t in the beginning.”

In fact, he was so grief-stricken by the loss of his friend and colleague, which came at about the same time as the breakup of his first marriage and the death of his father, that he slipped into a severe depression.

“It was quite a long grieving process, but I’m comfortable with it now. He lived life to the full, he created magnificently, from his soul. He was fearless.”

During another period of depression, a suicidal episode, May went to a clinic in Arizona. “They said, ‘What is your religion, what is your spirituality?’ I said: ‘I’m not sure.’ And they said: ‘Well, we need your spirituality to be a centre for your recovery. And I kind of floundered around for a while and in the end it was looking at the stars that gave that feeling back to me.

“There’s a great thing called The Serenity Prayer,” he says. “It’s taught in all kinds of clinics – it starts off with the word God, but you can say Higher Power – ‘God, give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.'”

He delivers the homily as if it is not cross-stitched and stuck up on wall after wall throughout the world. “To me that’s incredibly empowering and very often if I get to a sort of trough, that’s what I look at. It focuses you on the things which you can change.” And he stands up to his full 6ft 2in, plus a good five inches or so of hair, and wanders off to be photographed. From the lapel of his frock coat, a badger winks.

Chris Packham Slams ‘Puerile’ Abuse of Animals on I’m a Celebrity

Bushtucker Trials are a ‘Farce’ because ‘Venomous’ Creatures are Disabled to Protect Celebrities.

Chris Packham

NATURALIST Chris Packham has attacked the ITV reality show I’m a Celebrity for its “out-dated and puerile abuse of animals”.

The Springwatch star slammed the show’s so-called ‘Bushtucker trials’, in which a hapless Z-list celebrity is chosen to perform a task – generally involving close contact with slimy, venomous or toothy animals – in return for food.

Packham called the trials a “Pathetic Farce”, noting that none of the Celebrities is ever in any danger:

“The Tiny Crocodiles have their mouths gagged, the spiders have their fangs covered or removed, the snakes are non-venomous and the whole area has been drenched in insecticide so the poor things don’t get too pestered by biting insects.”

Packham has spent his career on TV shows that celebrate wildlife. His no-nonsense views on conservation – such as his belief that pandas should be allowed to go extinct because the money could be better spent elsewhere – have won him as much respect as his refusal to dumb down the science in his programmes.

Packham said he “dreads this time of year” because of I’m a Celebrity. His own live Springwatch and Autumnwatch shows on the BBC could be described as a rather more staid form of reality TV. But Packham says it isn’t I‘m a Celebrity‘s format he minds: just the show’s “Idiotic, Out-Dated and Puerile Abuse of Animals”.

Anthony McPartlin & Declan Donnelly better known as Ant & Dec Present I’m a Celebrity..Get Me Out of Here

Referring to his own TV shows, he says: “We don’t just go for the cute and cuddly, we champion the ugly and unpopular too and I work really hard to win new audiences over to the wonder and real value of nature.”

In contrast, Packham believes I’m a Celebrity promotes “medieval-style exploitation”. He asks: “Why not flog, birch, tar and feather or hang, draw and quarter the contestants as well?

“After all, these practices date from the same periods when animal baiting was popular entertainment.”·

Justin Bieber Accused Of Animal Cruelty

Justin Bieber is being Accused of Animal Cruelty after Presenting a Screaming Fan with His Pet Hamster.

The Cruel and Irresponsible Behaviour by Bieber took place after the singer’s performance at the Atlanta, USA Jingle Ball show last month.

If he genuinely cared for the Pet Hamster, why did he have it with him at a concert? And why would someone who cared about Animals subject them to such a loud, chaotic, terrifying experience. In short NO ONE would who really cared about Animals would.

Bieber is a Bloody Discrace, a spoilt brat, who obviously thinks he can do what he wants and is above any legal obligation or moral responsibility. What example is he giving out to young girls, he is certainly no role model, what he subjected tiny poor hamster too, you can see below:

Bieber’s Hamster, known as PAC, has since been photographed in his new home in Alabama, apparently looking happy and well with a girl called Tori.

Justin Bieber’s former, so called ‘Pet Hamster’, which he gave away, is now living in with its new owner, who has said she will treat the Tiny Hamster like a rodent king!!!!!!

Bieber unloaded the Hamster, named PAC, in a cage,  on to a crowd of historical screaming girls. It was among this chaos the unsuspecting screaming fan Tori managed to grab the cage in which the terrified Hamster was in.

Tori who is said to have been one of many Bieber fans, said she was shocked when Bieber randomly offered to the group of girls, the cage, but is excited about looking after the tiny Hamster and assures people he’s in good hands.

Tori says both she and PAC are living happily together at her home in Alabama and she plans on keeping her new furry friend as long as Bieber says it’s cool.

California Hamster Association

But the Californian Hamster Association is less than impressed.

Californian Hamster Association have said Hamsters are delicate creatures that “often succumb quickly to illness and death”, especially when faced with “sudden environmental change”.

It ominously added: “The moment that Hamster was handed off to a screaming girl in a harsh, frenzied environment was likely the moment it gazed at the short path to its doom.”

Justin Bieber issued a DEATH SENTENCE to his Pet Hamster PAC when he gave it away to a screaming fan outside of a concert last month.

This according to the California Hamster Association.

A representative for the group, Californian Hamster Association stated Bieber committed an act of “Animal Cruelty” when he gifted away the Hamster, even if his intentions were good.

Californian Hamster Association says, Hamsters are fragile creatures that “Often Succumb Quickly To Illness and Death, especially when faced with a ……..”Sudden Environmental Change.”

In short … “The moment the Hamster was handed off to a Screaming Girl in a Harsh, Frenzied Environment was likely the moment it gazed at the short path to its doom.”

DOOM!!!!!!

So what should Bieber have done instead? The Californian Hamster Association says, if Beiber no longer wanted the Hamster, he should have left it in the care of an Animal Shelter or Rescue Centre … so they could have handed it off to a responsible, new owner in a Safer Manner.

As for PAC, he’s currently alive and well in the care of Bieber’s fan Tori … who has vowed to treat the animal like a tiny rodent god.

So far, there has been no comment from Bieber.

Humane Program Working With Juvenile Detention Centre To Stop Animal Cruelty

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is reaching out to at-risk youth to educate them about the proper care of animals and hopefully stop the cycle of Animal Cruelty.

The Humane Society was able to start the program in October thanks to a $44,000 grant from the James A. and Faith Knight Foundation.

The Humane Society of Huron Valley investigates approximately 500 reports of Animal Cruelty each year.

“It is well documented that early Abusers of Animals often go on to engage in Violence and other Antisocial acts,” said Karen Patterson, director of Humane Education.

The Humane Society is hoping to help break the cycle of animal abuse by reaching out to at-risk youth.

Every Sunday Karen Patterson and Alex Ball go to the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They teach the kids there how to Care for Pets and give them an opportunity to interact with one of the Shelter Dogs.

The Program covers topics on Pet Safety, Animal Communication, Caring for Pets at Home, showing Respect and Compassion for Animals and Dog Cruelty.

The Humane Society hopes the program will benefit the troubled youth. “Our goals are to educate, and we want to rehabilitate too,” said Ball.

“We want to show we have Animals here that are always Compassionate. They Don’t Judge, They Don’t see Jumpsuits, and they Want to be loved.”

The kids at the centre love the program. “It’s a nice treat for them,” said Youth Counselor Kevin Lockhart.

The kids have been learning a lot from the program and have enjoyed having the Dogs around.

“It just gives you that warm, cuddly, comforting feeling that you can’t get from a human,” said 14-year-old Unique. “Dogs just have it, they just have that demeanor about them. It helps.”

Joanna Lumley Backs Long Distance Animal Transport Ban

Actress Joanna Lumley Has Backed a Campaign To End Long Distance Animal Transportation.

Joanna Lumley wants to see a ban to long distance animal transportation

Compassion in World Farming, which launched its campaign in London’s Trafalgar Square, wants an end to “the horrors of the live export trade”.

It said 80,664 sheep, calves, pigs and goats were exported to the continent in 2011.

The only UK port used for live animal exports is Ramsgate, in Kent.

The National Farmers Union said shipments were strictly controlled.

‘Cramped Conditions’

A campaign against shipments from Ramsgate has been backed by Thanet District Council.

Ms Lumley said: “The numbers involved in live exports is shocking. While we are part of the EU, we are a country in our own right and we need to act on this now.

“2012 is the year to make a change. We need to raise the price at the ports, so that it is more profitable for farmers to have their animals slaughtered close to their own farms.”

She added: “They [animals] can’t get off, unlike human beings who can just ring the bell and jump off the bus once they’ve reached their short destination.”

Compassion in World Farming claimed it had found sheep being transported across Europe in cramped, overloaded trucks with no water.

But speaking in November, NFU spokesman Mr Frank Langrish, who raises Romney Marsh lamb in Winchelsea, East Sussex, said exports were strictly controlled.

“The vehicles they travel on are superb. They are fitted with drinkers and fans to control the temperature,” he said.

Farm Reveals Shocking, Malicious Cruelty To Calves and Cows

At An Ohio, USA, Dairy Farm  Shocking, Malicious Cruelty To Calves and Cows Revealed By Hidden Cameras.

The Video was  secretly shot by an investigator with Mercy For Animals Reavled the Shocking, Malicious Cruelty To Calves and Cows.

The video, recorded between April and May, 2010, shows dairy farm workers:

  • Beating Cows in the Face with Crowbars
  • Stabbing Defenseless Cows them with Pitchforks,
  • Breaking Cows Tails, and
  • Punching, Throwing, and Kicking Calves.

On September 24, 2010, Billy Joe Gregg, Jr., a worker at Conklin Dairy Farms caught on hidden camera during a Mercy For Animals investigation Maliciously Abusing Cows and Calves, pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts of Cruelty to Animals.

Gregg was sentenced to eight months in jail, ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, and is barred from contact with animals for three years. Gregg must also receive counseling through a program that specialises in treating individuals involved in animal abuse cases.

Gregg’s arrest and conviction stem from chilling undercover footage recorded during a Mercy For Animals investigation earlier this year at Conklin Dairy Farms in Plain City, Ohio.

During a four-week investigation in April and May, MFA’s investigator documented farm workers:

  • Violently Punching Young Calves in the Face, Body Slamming them to the ground, and pulling and throwing them by their ears
  • Routinely using Pitchforks to Stab Cows in the Face, Legs and Stomach
  • Kicking “downed” Cows (those too injured to stand) in the Face and Neck – Abuse Carried out and encouraged by the farm’s owner
  • Maliciously Beating Restrained Cows in the Face with Crowbars – some attacks involving over 40 blows to the head
  • Twisting cows’ Tails until the bones snapped
  • Punching Cows’ Udders
  • Bragging about Stabbing, Dragging, Shooting, Breaking Bones, and Beating Cows and Calves to Death

After viewing the footage, Dr. Bernard Rollin, Distinguished Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, stated: “”This is probably the most gratuitous, sustained, sadistic animal abuse I have ever seen. The video depicts calculated, deliberate cruelty, based not on momentary rage but on taking pleasure through causing pain to cows and calves who are defenseless.””

Sadly, cruelty to farmed animals in Ohio – no matter how egregious – is classified as a mere misdemeanor. Ohio has some of the weakest animal protection laws in the nation – ranking 43rd out of all 50 states. Further, no federal laws provide protection for farmed animals during their lives on the farm. Such inadequate state laws and the absence of federal laws lead to rampant abuse.

The deplorable conditions uncovered at Conklin Dairy Farms further highlight the reality that animal agriculture cannot be trusted to self-regulate and that meaningful federal and state law must be implemented and strengthened to prevent egregious cruelty to farmed animals.

“Gregg’s punishment is a slap on the wrist compared to the unimaginable suffering endured by the animals who were victims of his malicious abuse,” says MFA’s Executive Director, Nathan Runkle. “”It’s an outrage that in Ohio it’s a mere misdemeanor to sadistically punch, beat and stab farmed animals, break their bones and otherwise torture them. This case should serve as a wake-up call to all compassionate citizens that Ohio must do more to strengthen its animal cruelty laws.””

Although many of the abuses documented at Conklin Dairy Farms are expressions of Gregg’s sadistic pathology, numerous MFA undercover investigations at dairy farmspig farmsegg farmshatcheries and slaughterhouses have revealed that violence and abuse to farmed animals – whether malicious or institutionalized – run rampant nationwide.

Compassionate consumers can end their direct financial support of farmed animal abuse by rejecting dairy, and other animal products, and adopting a vegan diet.

He was given the Animal Victoria Cross for saving soldiers’ lives in Afghanistan where he worked with his handler to detect roadside bombs.

Sadly Theo and his handler Lance Corporal Liam Tasker died while on patrol in the country in 2011.

The Medal was accepted by Sergeant Matthew Jones and search Dog Grace, who served with Theo and his handler Lance Corporal Tasker.

Since 1943 the Dickin Medal has been awarded to animals serving with the military, police or rescue services for acts of bravery.

Pigeons, horses and cats have all been awarded the medal in the past.

British military Dog, Theo Gets Posthumous Medal

Theo, a springer spaniel, died from an undiagnosed seizure hours after his handler Lance Corporal Tasker was killed on March 1, 2011 in a firefight.

The British Military Dog called Theo Died in Afghanistan has been awarded the highest bravery award for any Animal for finding hidden weapons and improvised explosive devices planted by the Taliban.

Theo, a Springer Spaniel, Died from an Undiagnosed Seizure Hours After his handler Lance Corporal Tasker was killed on March 1, 2011 in a firefight.

Theo worked for five months in Afghanistan with Royal Army Veterinary Corps, searching out roadside bombs.

Theo has now been recognised with the Dickin Medal by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA).

It is the highest award any animal can receive and is given for gallantry or devotion to duty in military conflict.

The PDSA Dickin medal recognises that in finding IEDs and bomb-making equipment, Theo prevented soldiers and civilians from being killed or wounded.

Tasker’s mother, Jane Duffy, said she was “so, so proud” of the award given to Theo.

“It’s like they were a team. “

“One couldn’t have worked without the other out there, doing the job they were doing.”

Theo still holds the record for the most operational finds made by an arms and explosives search Dog in Afghanistan, with 14, the BBC reported.

Theo is the 64th Animal to receive the PDSA Dickin Medal.

Other recipients include 27 Other Dogs, 32 pigeons, three horses and a cat.

Bomb-sniffing military dog honored with Britain’s highest animal bravery award

It’s never too late to say, “Thank you, for saving our lives,” and today in London a gathering of British soldiers and military dogs honored a fallen hero named Theo, a Springer Spaniel who died the same day his soldier partner was killed in Afghanistan.

The soldier and his canine partner lived together, served together and died together.

From London’s AP:

British soldiers and military dogs gathered at a London army barracks Thursday to honor a fallen hero with selfless courage, nerves of steel — and four legs.

Theo, a bomb-sniffing Springer Spaniel who died in Afghanistan on the day his soldier partner was killed, was posthumously honored with the Dickin Medal, Britain’s highest award for bravery by animals.

Theo worked alongside Lance Cpl. Liam Tasker, searching for roadside bombs in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold.

Tasker, 26, died in a firefight with insurgents in March 2011, and Theo suffered a fatal seizure hours later. Tasker’s mother, Jane Duffy, says the pair were inseparable. She’s convinced Theo died of a broken heart.

“They’ll be watching us, and they’ll be so proud,” she said. “I just wish they were here to get it themselves.”

During their tour together, the successful soldier and dog team uncovered over a dozen bombs intended to kill British soldiers. Tasker, a Sagittarian, was reportedly an excellent dog handler and trainer and the dogs he worked with were exceptionally responsive to him.

ABC World News reported in March, 2011:

Tasker and Theo had worked together uncovering roadside bombs in Afghanistan and were remarkably successful, finding 14 bombs meant to kill and maim British soldiers.

They had more operational finds than any other individual team in Afghanistan to date, the Ministry of Defense said.

They were featured in a video released by the Army before Tasker’s death, showing a perky Theo on patrol with his handler.

The two were so good at what they were doing that their tour of duty had been extended by a month.

Theo, 22 months old and on his first tour of duty, was with Tasker when he was felled by a sniper’s bullet during a firefight and died.

Watch the video to see this heroic team in action. These animals serve us the same way they love us…unconditionally.

Other animal heroes

Dogs are not the only animals used in the military and honored with awards for service and heroism. Over the years, there have been pigeons, horses and one rat-killing cat bestowed with bravery and service awards.

While these animals may not consciously understand their valuable roles during these dangerous missions, something in them must sense the importance of their life-saving tasks, as they seem to perform them with incredible courage, determination and flawless skills.

Perhaps it’s just simple, unconditional love in action.

The Dog in Chinese Astrology

Dog people possess the best traits of human nature, just like their animal counterpart. They have a deep sense of loyalty, they’re honest, and inspire other people’s confidence because they know how to keep secrets.

Dog people care little for wealth, yet somehow always seem to have money. Dog people make good leaders.

Occupying the 11th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the Dog symbolizes character traits such as loyalty, compatibility and kindness.

Dogs frequently offer kind words and useful advice, always listening and lending a shoulder when necessary. Dogs often become deeply involved in others’ lives and are sometimes perceived as nosy. Ensuring others are happy is more important to the Dog than wealth, money or success.

Dogs are determined individuals; always wanting to master a new subject before moving on and always finishing what they start. Dogs value friendships; they’re loyal, honest, trustworthy and reliable and have strong morals and ethics.

People born during the following years are considered Dogs in Chinese Astrology: 1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006.

Lance Corporal Liam Tasker and Theo, thank you…may you rest in peace after having lived and served with such courage.

Sadistic Woman Violently Beats Puppy

California Woman Arrested Following Violent Attack On A Puppy

On Wednesday, a OakhurstMadera County, California, USA woman called ‘Janice Aguilar‘  was arrested by Police and placed behind bars for Repeatedly Beating and Slamming on the Ground a Young Labrador Puppy.

California Woman Janice Aguilar Violently Beats Puppy

Sadistic Janice Aguilar Violently Beats and Slams Puppy To The Ground

The Oakhurst woman was behind bars on Wednesday night after Authorities said “she Beat a Puppy So Badly That Even Veteran Law Enforcement Officials Were Shocked”.

According to witnesses, they claimed to have observed 39-year-old Janice Aguilar Beating a Puppy and Repeatedly Slamming its Small Body Into The Ground.

Following the beating, Aguilar was seen flagging down a car and leaving with the injured puppy, Madera County sheriff‘s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

According to the Police report, the driver of the vehicle attempted to take Aguilar to two different veterinary clinics in order for the puppy to be treated, but the Aguilar refused and asked to be dropped at a park instead.

Deputies were called by Aguilar’s neighbors in the Sierra Nevada foothills town of Oakhurst around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when they saw her beating the puppy and banging it on the ground, Stuart said,

Following the Sustained Beating before Deputies arrived Aguilar had already put the Injured Puppy described by Stuart as “Crying in Pain” into her backpack and flagged down a passing car. This had been according to witnesses who saw Aguilar Stuff The Puppy That Was Still Alive But Terrible Pain and Grievously Injured Puppy Into A Backpack.

The driver of the car drove Aguilar and the dog to the offices of two separate veterinarians, but according to Stuart, Aguilar refused to bring the puppy into either office for treatment. And, according to Stuart, after the second stop Aguilar asked to be dropped off at nearby park, got out of the car and walked away.

“The sick part of this, the witness could hear the dog whimpering, and assumed the woman wanted go to a vet,” Stuart said.

“Instead she got dropped off near a park,” Stuart said.

The Puppy, believed to be a Labrador mix only between 8 and 11 weeks old, was found by another witness who saw the Severe Pain the Puppy was in and thought it was beyond help and felt the only thing to do was to put the Poor Puppy out of its Terrible Pain and Misery, Madera County sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

I have dealt with Animal Neglect, but I have never Dealt with such an Extreme Case of Cruelty to an Animal,” Stuart said.

Aguilar, who told Deputies that the Puppy was attacked by a Pit Bull, was booked into Madera County Jail late Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of Animal Cruelty and Death.

Bail information, if any, and a Court Appearance Date was not available on Wednesday evening.

Witnesses have stated that the Puppy Was Still Crying In Pain.
