James Backus – Cat’s Killing Leads To Cohoes, Albany, New York, USA Man’s Arrest

ALBANY, NEW YORK — A Cohoes man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly killed a cat by slamming its head into the sidewalk along South Pearl Street.

James Backus, 44, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty following an investigation that began after officers were told by another person that Backus had just killed a cat near the intersection of South Pearl and State streets, Albany Police spokesman Steven Smith said.

He said Backus allegedly picked up the cat by the tail and struck its head against the concrete four or five times. Backus then placed the cat, which was allegedly lying injured in the road after being hit by a car, in a city garbage can, Smith said.

Backus was arraigned Wednesday in city court and bail was set at $15,000, but a city court judge released Backus on his own recognizance.

Science Advisor says Badger Cull Plan is a ‘Crazy Scheme’

The Scientist whose Research is being cited by the UK Government to Justify its Plan to Cull (KILL) Badgers in England has described the scheme as “Crazy”.

Lord Krebs spoke to BBC News after the government’s environment advisory body Natural England has issued a culling licence to a consortium of landowners in Gloucestershire.

The cull is intended to control the spread of TB in cattle.

The scientist whose research is being cited by the government to justify its plan to cull badgers in England has described the scheme as “crazy”.

Lord Krebs spoke to BBC News after the government’s environment advisory body Natural England has issued a culling licence to a consortium of landowners in Gloucestershire.

The cull is intended to control the spread of TB in cattle.

Some badgers can carry TB and pass it on to cattle

Some badgers can carry TB and pass it on to cattle

Both groups will then have to show that they can pay for the culling and shoot them in sufficient numbers before full licences are granted. BBC News has been told that these could be issued in three weeks and intensive culling could begin immediately.

The culls will be monitored by an independent group for a period of six weeks. If the body is satisfied that the culls are effective and humane it will advise ministers to continue the trials for four years.

This would pave the way for further applications. Natural England will issue a maximum of 10 licences each year – with future culls.

The culls are intended to reduce TB in cattle by some 16% over nine years in the immediate area. Across England though the effect is much smaller, around 5%.

The aim of the pilot schemes is to assess the effectiveness of the government’s plan to slow down the spread of TB in cattle in England. The Welsh government has opted for a system of vaccination while Scotland is officially TB-free.

Lord Krebs is a respected science adviser to government

The plan is based on the results of a nine-year trial which showed that the spread of the disease could be slowed slightly if more than 70% of badgers in an area could be eradicated. If it was less than 70% – the spread of TB to cattle might even increase.

But the scientist who carried out the study has told BBC News that these pilot studies make no sense.

Lord Krebs, who is one of the government’s most respected scientific advisers, said that the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), which is administering the scheme, has no way of knowing how many badgers there are in the area, so will not know when they’ve killed 70% of the badgers in the area.

“I would go down the vaccination and biosecurity route rather than this crazy scheme that may deliver very small advantage, may deliver none. And it’s very hard to see how Defra are going to collect the crucial data to assess whether it’s worth going ahead with free shooting at all,” he said.

Defra has said that it would be using data from previous studies and would commission its own research to estimate badger numbers.

According to Prof Sir Robert Watson, a former science adviser to Defra, which is overseeing the process, culling alone will not solve the problem.

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson- 'Badger culling alone not a solution'

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson- ‘Badger culling alone not a solution’

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson: ‘Badger culling alone not a solution’

“Culling won’t solve the problem nationally (across England),” he told BBC News in a recent interview.

“But farmers in Devon, Cornwall and Gloucestershire are arguing that it can get between a 16% and 20% reduction which they think is significant and that they are willing to pay for.”

The culls are paid for by local groups of farmers and carried out by private contractors. Prof Watson said that he himself questioned whether the cost of the culls would be economically worthwhile.

“I would say the economics is very close as to whether it is worth it. But the government has made a decision that (it should be tried if farmers are willing to fund it),” he said.

“The question (then) is: ‘Is it a significant effect? Is it cost effective? Is it socially and ethically appropriate?”

The Pilot Areas

  • West Gloucestershire pilot area description: mainly in the county of Gloucestershire, predominantly within the council districts of the Forest of Dean and Tewkesbury, and parts lie within the districts of Wychavon, Malvern Hills and the south east part of the county of Herefordshire. The area does not include the public forest estate in the Forest of Dean.

  • West Somerset pilot area description: located in the county of Somerset. The application area predominantly lies within the council district of West Somerset and part lies within the district of Taunton Deane.

  • Source: Natural England

Animal welfare and wildlife campaigners have opposed the cull, which will allow wild badgers to be shot when they come out at night, but lost their fight in the High Court last week.

Defra says the action is necessary to protect cattle from bovine TB, which leads to the slaughter of thousands of cattle each year.

Defra Minister David Heath said: “Our priority has always been to ensure that any culling of badgers is carried out in a safe, humane and effective way.

“The licence for Gloucestershire issued by Natural England today meets all the strict criteria we imposed, and the pilot in this area will help us assess the effectiveness of controlled shooting before we look at a wider roll out to control the spread of bovine TB in cattle.

“No one wants to kill badgers but the science is clear that we will not get on top of this disease without tackling it in both wildlife and cattle.”

Plans to begin culling in Wales were recently abandoned in favour of a vaccination policy. There are no proposals to cull badgers in Scotland, where TB incidence is low.

Couple Arrested For Animal Cruelty and Child Abuse

Couple Jeff O’Neil and Jennifer Kovacs Arrested For 300 Counts of Animal Cruelty and Child Abuse.

OLDSMAR, Florida USA  – A woman who shared her home with 300 Animals, which the Tampa Bay SPCA took away Sunday 6th January 2013, is reacting to the incident.

Joyce Kovacs said she is glad the Animals are gone.

They belonged to her daughter, Jennifer, and her daughter’s boyfriend, Jeffrey O’Neil, who lived with Joyce.

Jeff O’Neil and Jennifer Kovacs were arrested for Child Abuse and Animal Cruelty.

“I’m kind of devastated, you know. I guess I feel bad for Jennifer and Jeff that they’re sitting in jail, and yet they brought this all on themselves,” said Joyce.

Animals — including snakes, lizards, and rats — were taken from the home along the 200 block of Lee Street after deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call there about a missing infant.

Joyce said it was the couple’s daughter, who a relative had come and taken away. According to deputies, a family member came to the house, saw the Child was Crying, but couldn’t wake O’Neil. The relative left a note, which Jennifer and O’Neil didn’t see.

That’s when deputies saw all the Animals being held in 88 Cages. They described the home as being in ” Deplorable Conditions.”.

Some Animals were even found ‘Dead’ and ‘Half Eaten by the Other Animals’.

According to Deputies, they were being Bred and Sold without the Proper Licensing and Conditions.

The SPCA Tampa Bay was called and they took all of the 300 Animals.

Joyce said her daughter and O’Neil sold some of the Animals at flea markets or over the Internet, but the breeding got out of control. She added it’s been that way for the past year.

She said she told Jennifer and O’Neil they would have to leave the house soon, just recently. Joyce said she put up with it for so long for the sake of her granddaughter, because the couple had nowhere else to go.

All of the Animals are in the care of Tampa Bay SPCA now.

According to the organisation, they will try to get the owners to sign the Animals over to them. If not, the SPCA will have to file for custody.

Chris Packham Slams ‘Puerile’ Abuse of Animals on I’m a Celebrity

Bushtucker Trials are a ‘Farce’ because ‘Venomous’ Creatures are Disabled to Protect Celebrities.

Chris Packham

NATURALIST Chris Packham has attacked the ITV reality show I’m a Celebrity for its “out-dated and puerile abuse of animals”.

The Springwatch star slammed the show’s so-called ‘Bushtucker trials’, in which a hapless Z-list celebrity is chosen to perform a task – generally involving close contact with slimy, venomous or toothy animals – in return for food.

Packham called the trials a “Pathetic Farce”, noting that none of the Celebrities is ever in any danger:

“The Tiny Crocodiles have their mouths gagged, the spiders have their fangs covered or removed, the snakes are non-venomous and the whole area has been drenched in insecticide so the poor things don’t get too pestered by biting insects.”

Packham has spent his career on TV shows that celebrate wildlife. His no-nonsense views on conservation – such as his belief that pandas should be allowed to go extinct because the money could be better spent elsewhere – have won him as much respect as his refusal to dumb down the science in his programmes.

Packham said he “dreads this time of year” because of I’m a Celebrity. His own live Springwatch and Autumnwatch shows on the BBC could be described as a rather more staid form of reality TV. But Packham says it isn’t I‘m a Celebrity‘s format he minds: just the show’s “Idiotic, Out-Dated and Puerile Abuse of Animals”.

Referring to his own TV shows, he says: “We don’t just go for the cute and cuddly, we champion the ugly and unpopular too and I work really hard to win new audiences over to the wonder and real value of nature.”

In contrast, Packham believes I’m a Celebrity promotes “medieval-style exploitation”. He asks: “Why not flog, birch, tar and feather or hang, draw and quarter the contestants as well?

“After all, these practices date from the same periods when animal baiting was popular entertainment.”·

Justin Bieber Accused Of Animal Cruelty

Justin Bieber is being Accused of Animal Cruelty after Presenting a Screaming Fan with His Pet Hamster.

The Cruel and Irresponsible Behaviour by Bieber took place after the singer’s performance at the Atlanta, USA Jingle Ball show last month.

If he genuinely cared for the Pet Hamster, why did he have it with him at a concert? And why would someone who cared about Animals subject them to such a loud, chaotic, terrifying experience. In short NO ONE would who really cared about Animals would.

Bieber is a Bloody Discrace, a spoilt brat, who obviously thinks he can do what he wants and is above any legal obligation or moral responsibility. What example is he giving out to young girls, he is certainly no role model, what he subjected tiny poor hamster too, you can see below:

Bieber’s Hamster, known as PAC, has since been photographed in his new home in Alabama, apparently looking happy and well with a girl called Tori.

Justin Bieber’s former, so called ‘Pet Hamster’, which he gave away, is now living in with its new owner, who has said she will treat the Tiny Hamster like a rodent king!!!!!!

Bieber unloaded the Hamster, named PAC, in a cage,  on to a crowd of historical screaming girls. It was among this chaos the unsuspecting screaming fan Tori managed to grab the cage in which the terrified Hamster was in.

Tori who is said to have been one of many Bieber fans, said she was shocked when Bieber randomly offered to the group of girls, the cage, but is excited about looking after the tiny Hamster and assures people he’s in good hands.

Tori says both she and PAC are living happily together at her home in Alabama and she plans on keeping her new furry friend as long as Bieber says it’s cool.

But the Californian Hamster Association is less than impressed.

Californian Hamster Association have said Hamsters are delicate creatures that “often succumb quickly to illness and death”, especially when faced with “sudden environmental change”.

It ominously added: “The moment that Hamster was handed off to a screaming girl in a harsh, frenzied environment was likely the moment it gazed at the short path to its doom.”

Justin Bieber issued a DEATH SENTENCE to his Pet Hamster PAC when he gave it away to a screaming fan outside of a concert last month.

Justin Bieber issued a DEATH SENTENCE to his pet hamster PAC when he gave it away to a screaming fan

This according to the California Hamster Association.

A representative for the group, Californian Hamster Association stated Bieber committed an act of “Animal Cruelty” when he gifted away the Hamster, even if his intentions were good.

Californian Hamster Association says, Hamsters are fragile creatures that “Often Succumb Quickly To Illness and Death, especially when faced with a ……..”Sudden Environmental Change.”

In short … “The moment the Hamster was handed off to a Screaming Girl in a Harsh, Frenzied Environment was likely the moment it gazed at the short path to its doom.”

DOOM!!!!!!

So what should Bieber have done instead? The Californian Hamster Association says, if Beiber no longer wanted the Hamster, he should have left it in the care of an Animal Shelter or Rescue Centre … so they could have handed it off to a responsible, new owner in a Safer Manner.

As for PAC, he’s currently alive and well in the care of Bieber’s fan Tori … who has vowed to treat the animal like a tiny rodent god.

So far, there has been no comment from Bieber.

Humane Program Working With Juvenile Detention Centre To Stop Animal Cruelty

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is reaching out to at-risk youth to educate them about the proper care of animals and hopefully stop the cycle of Animal Cruelty.

The Humane Society was able to start the program in October thanks to a $44,000 grant from the James A. and Faith Knight Foundation.

The Humane Society of Huron Valley investigates approximately 500 reports of Animal Cruelty each year.

“It is well documented that early Abusers of Animals often go on to engage in Violence and other Antisocial acts,” said Karen Patterson, director of Humane Education.

The Humane Society is hoping to help break the cycle of animal abuse by reaching out to at-risk youth.

Every Sunday Karen Patterson and Alex Ball go to the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They teach the kids there how to Care for Pets and give them an opportunity to interact with one of the Shelter Dogs.

The Program covers topics on Pet Safety, Animal Communication, Caring for Pets at Home, showing Respect and Compassion for Animals and Dog Cruelty.

The Humane Society hopes the program will benefit the troubled youth. “Our goals are to educate, and we want to rehabilitate too,” said Ball.

“We want to show we have Animals here that are always Compassionate. They Don’t Judge, They Don’t see Jumpsuits, and they Want to be loved.”

The kids at the centre love the program. “It’s a nice treat for them,” said Youth Counselor Kevin Lockhart.

The kids have been learning a lot from the program and have enjoyed having the Dogs around.

“It just gives you that warm, cuddly, comforting feeling that you can’t get from a human,” said 14-year-old Unique. “Dogs just have it, they just have that demeanor about them. It helps.”

Sadistic Woman Violently Beats Puppy

California Woman Arrested Following Violent Attack On A Puppy

On Wednesday, a OakhurstMadera County, California, USA woman called ‘Janice Aguilar‘  was arrested by Police and placed behind bars for Repeatedly Beating and Slamming on the Ground a Young Labrador Puppy.

California Woman Janice Aguilar Violently Beats Puppy

Sadistic Janice Aguilar Violently Beats and Slams Puppy To The Ground

The Oakhurst woman was behind bars on Wednesday night after Authorities said “she Beat a Puppy So Badly That Even Veteran Law Enforcement Officials Were Shocked”.

According to witnesses, they claimed to have observed 39-year-old Janice Aguilar Beating a Puppy and Repeatedly Slamming its Small Body Into The Ground.

Following the beating, Aguilar was seen flagging down a car and leaving with the injured puppy, Madera County sheriff‘s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

According to the Police report, the driver of the vehicle attempted to take Aguilar to two different veterinary clinics in order for the puppy to be treated, but the Aguilar refused and asked to be dropped at a park instead.

Deputies were called by Aguilar’s neighbors in the Sierra Nevada foothills town of Oakhurst around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when they saw her beating the puppy and banging it on the ground, Stuart said,

Following the Sustained Beating before Deputies arrived Aguilar had already put the Injured Puppy described by Stuart as “Crying in Pain” into her backpack and flagged down a passing car. This had been according to witnesses who saw Aguilar Stuff The Puppy That Was Still Alive But Terrible Pain and Grievously Injured Puppy Into A Backpack.

The driver of the car drove Aguilar and the dog to the offices of two separate veterinarians, but according to Stuart, Aguilar refused to bring the puppy into either office for treatment. And, according to Stuart, after the second stop Aguilar asked to be dropped off at nearby park, got out of the car and walked away.

“The sick part of this, the witness could hear the dog whimpering, and assumed the woman wanted go to a vet,” Stuart said.

“Instead she got dropped off near a park,” Stuart said.

The Puppy, believed to be a Labrador mix only between 8 and 11 weeks old, was found by another witness who saw the Severe Pain the Puppy was in and thought it was beyond help and felt the only thing to do was to put the Poor Puppy out of its Terrible Pain and Misery, Madera County sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

I have dealt with Animal Neglect, but I have never Dealt with such an Extreme Case of Cruelty to an Animal,” Stuart said.

Aguilar, who told Deputies that the Puppy was attacked by a Pit Bull, was booked into Madera County Jail late Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of Animal Cruelty and Death.

Bail information, if any, and a Court Appearance Date was not available on Wednesday evening.

Witnesses have stated that the Puppy Was Still Crying In Pain.

Man Beat Small Dog To Death

Sadistic Man Arrested For Beating A Small Dog To Death

An 18-month-old Shih Tzu is dead and a 27-year-old man is behind bars following a brutal case of animal cruelty which took place on Sunday.

According to a story published Monday in the Intelligencer, police arrested Anthony Doyle of Wheeling, W. Va. on Sunday night after a witness reported seeing him attack a small dog and discard the body in nearby weeds.

The woman who claims to have witnessed the beating told the authorities that she saw Doyle hitting the little dog on the back porch of a residence, and then:

“Dive On The Small Dog and Punch It Until It Went Limp,”

The witness correctly identified to the authorities the location of where she saw Doyle discard the young Dog’s body.

The Shih Tzu apparently belonged to another woman who became “hysterical” when she entered her apartment and discovered blood splattered on the walls from her fatally injured dog.

Police noted that Doyle was also covered in blood, and appeared to be intoxicated.

Sadistic Anthony Doyle Beat and Punched Small Dog To Death

Sadistic Anthony Doyle Beat and Punched Small Dog To Death

Anthony Doyle is now facing felony animal cruelty for the dog’s death.

WHEELING – Police arrested Anthony Doyle Sunday night after he allegedly beat a small dog to death at a Wheeling Island residence and dumped its body in nearby weeds.

Ohio County Magistrate Charles Murphy on Monday arraigned Doyle, 27, of Wheeling on a felony charge of animal cruelty. As of late Monday, Doyle remained in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville in lieu of $25,000 cash bond.

According to a police report, officers went to the Island Grill parking lot around 9:30 p.m. Sunday to meet a woman who said she earlier witnessed Doyle beat the dog to death. The woman told police she heard a dog crying earlier that evening before she saw Doyle beating the animal on the back porch of a South Wabash Street residence.

About one hour later, the woman heard the dog crying again. She then saw Doyle “dive on the dog and punch it until it went limp,” the police report states. Doyle then dumped the dog’s body in a weeded area near the house, the witness told police.

Officers traveled to the scene of the alleged crime and found the deceased dog where the witness said Doyle had abandoned it. Animal control removed the dog from the scene.

The dog’s owner arrived at the scene after her downstairs neighbors called her to advise they had heard loud banging coming from her apartment.

She told officers she owned an 18-month-old Shih Tzu. After entering her home with police, the dog’s owner “went hysterical, because the house had blood spatter throughout the apartment,” the report states.

Officers found Doyle inside the apartment. His clothes were covered in blood, and he appeared to be intoxicated, police said. He reportedly denied any knowledge of how the dog had died.

The witness reportedly identified Doyle to officers as the man she had seen beating the dog. Police said Doyle had been staying at the home as a guest.

Children Who are Cruel to Animals: When To Worry

Childhood Animal Cruelty  Can Be Normal Or A Red Flag.

Disturbed by a high pitched cry, three year old Christopher’s mom walks in to the living room to find him swinging their new kitten around by the tail.  Five year John’s babysitter witnesses John repeatedly blowing a loud horn into his dog’s ear, laughing at the animal’s obvious distress.  Ten year old Liam’s older brother discovers him holding a lighter flame to the family guinea pig‘s foot.

Since the 1970″s, research has consistently reported childhood cruelty to animals as the first warning sign of later delinquency, violence, and criminal behavior.  In fact, nearly all violent crime perpetrators have a history of animal cruelty in their profiles.  Albert deSalvo, the Boston Strangler found guilty of killing 13 women, shot arrows through dogs and cats he trapped as a child.  Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold boasted about mutilating animals for fun.

At the same time, most parents have been upset by some form of childhood cruelty to animals – whether it’s pulling the legs off of a bug or sitting on top of a puppy.  We struggle to understand why any child would mistreat an animal.  And when should we worry?  Where’s the line between a budding serial killer like Jeffrey Dahmer and normal curiosity and experimentation?

Motivations Behind Animal Cruelty

Most commonly, children who abuse animals have either witnessed or experienced abuse themselves.  For example, statistics show that 30 percent of children who have witnessed domestic violence act out a similar type of violence against their pets. In fact, the link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence is so well-known that many U.S. communities now cross-train social-service and animal-control agencies in how to recognize signs of animal abuse as possible indicators of other abusive behaviors.

While childhood and adolescent motives for animal cruelty has not been well-researched, interviews suggest a number of additional developmentally related motivations:

  1. “Curiosity or exploration (i.e., the animal is injured or killed in the process of being examined, usually by a young or developmentally delayed child).
  2. Peer pressure (e.g., peers may encourage animal abuse or require it as part of an initiation rite).
  3. Mood enhancement (e.g., animal abuse is used to relieve boredom or depression).
  4. Sexual gratification (i.e., bestiality).
  5. Forced abuse (i.e., the child is coerced into animal abuse by a more powerful individual).
  6. Attachment to an animal (e.g., the child kills an animal to prevent its torture by another individual).
  7. Animal phobias (that cause a preemptive attack on a feared animal).
  8. Identification with the child’s abuser (e.g., a victimized child may try to regain a sense of power by victimizing a more vulnerable animal).
  9. Posttraumatic play (i.e., reenacting violent episodes with an animal victim).
  10. Imitation (i.e., copying a parent’s or other adult’s abusive “discipline” of animals).
  11. Self-injury (i.e., using an animal to inflict injuries on the child’s own body).
  12. Rehearsal for interpersonal violence (i.e., “practicing” violence on stray animals or pets before engaging in violent acts against other people).
  13. Vehicle for emotional abuse (for example, injuring a sibling’s pet to frighten the sibling),”

Animal Cruelty:  Are There Types of Abusers?

I’m not aware of any formal typologies that exist for children who abuse animals.  However, as a rule of thumb, it may be useful to use the following guidelines in trying to assess whether or not the problem is serious or can be easily addressed.  Caveat: These are general guiidelines and each situation should be evaluated individually.

The Experimenter:  (ages 1-6 or developmentally delayed).  This is usually a preschool child who has not developed the cognitive maturity to understand that animals have feelings are not to be treated as toys.  This may be the child’s first pet or s/he doesn’t have a lot of experience or training on how to take care of a variety of animals.

What to do:  To some extent, of course, this depends on the age and development of the child.  In general, though, explain to the child that it is not okay to hit or mistreat an animal, just as it’s not okay to hit or mistreat another child.  Humane education interventions (teaching children to be kind, caring, and nurturing toward animals) by parents, childcare providers, and teachers are likely to be sufficient to encourage desistence of animal abuse in these children,

The “Cry-for-Help” Abuser:  (6/7 – 12).  This is a child who intellectually understands that it is not okay to hurt animals.  This behavior is not due to a lack of education’ instead, the animal abuse is more likely to be a symptom of a deeper psychological problem.  As previously noted, a number of studies have linked childhood animal abuse to domestic violence in the home as well as childhood physical or sexual abuse.

What to do:  Seek professional assistance.  While I’m a big believer in parents’ abilities to weather many of the normal ups and downs of childrearing without professional assistance, this is an exception.  It is not “normal” for a child this age to intentionally mistreat an animal.

The Conduct-Disordered Abuser:  (12+)  Teens who abuse animals almost always engage in other antisocial behaviors – substance abuse, gang activities, Sometimes the animal abuse is in conjunction with a deviant peer group (an initiation rite or as a result of peer pressure), while other times it may be used as a way to alleviate boredom or achieve a sense of control.

What to do:  Get professional help immediately.  If possible, enlist the support of friends, family members, even teachers.

The Bottom Line

Every act of violence committed against an animal is not a sign that a person is going to turn out to be a homicidal maniac.  Particularly with young children, whose natural exuberance and curiosity can lead to some unpleasant experiences for their pets, it is fine to shrug off an occasional lapse in judgment while continuing to educate the child about humane animal treatment.

However, locking a pet inside a closed space, violently lashing out at a pet after getting in trouble with a parent, or taking pleasure in watching an animal in pain are all “red flags” that signal the need for professional intervention.  This is particularly true when the child has the cognitive maturity to understand that what s/he is doing is wrong – and repeatedly does it anyway.

3 Children Torture and Abuse Kittens

Three Watsonville, SANTA CRUZ County, California, USA Children To Face Animal Cruelty Charges In Torture Of Kittens

Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Announced They seek to Charge Three Children, Of Watsonville, California, USA, All Under Ten Years Old To Face Felony Animal Abuse charges in the death of one kitten and the torture of two kittens late last week.

Witness Reports Alleged To Have Seen The Children One As Young As Five Years Old Are Suspected Of Repeatedly Throwing and Slamming One Of  The 6 Week Old Kittens Against A Wall And Hanging The Other Two Kittens By A Rope!

Two Girls and One Boy Aged 5, 7, and 10 were seen by witnesses as they tried to Swing and Strangle Two of the Kittens. The Kitten who was repeated Thrown and Slammed Against The Wall Suffered Brain Damage and Had To Be Euthanised.

It happened in Watsonville Sunday night, where a witness called in the Animal Abuse to Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Investigators.

Two of the Three, Six Week Old Kittens Now Named Patrick and Henry, Pictured Above Survived the Horrendous and Sadistic Attack can’t see right now because of their injuries.

Animal Friends Rescue Project Volunteer Melissa Finley said the Kittens were Swung Around Several Times On A Noose Causing ONE Kitten to get a Severe Eye Infection.

“Because the Ligature was so Tight it Caused a Change in Pressure in the Eye,” said Finley.

Very Sadly, The Third Kitten Was Not So Lucky as the other Two Kittens, Patrick and Henry. It Was Thrown Against a Wall Repeatedly and Had To Be Put Down Because of Too Much Brain Damage.

Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter staff say if a witness hadn’t come forward fast enough, these two kittens may not even be alive right now.

“We want to send a clear message that this is absolutely unacceptable behavior by these children towards these defenseless animals,” said Melanie Sobel.

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter investigators are recommending Felony Animal Cruelty Charges. Something Shelter Manager Melanie Sobel said these children deserve.

“This needs to be addressed right now, because it could escalate into more serious egregious acts of violence against humans or animals. Serial killers; there’s a 100% correlation between all of them having Abusing Animals as Children. It doesn’t mean these Children are going to grow up and be Serial Killers, but all serial killers have abused animals as children,” said Sobel.

An article in PsychologyToday.com contends that childhood animal cruelty is the first warning sign of later delinquency, violence, and criminal behavior. Virtually all violent criminals have had a history of animal cruelty and abuse. Children who abuse animals most commonly are children who have been abused themselves or have witnessed abuse.

As for the survivors, Patrick and Henry they are on the road to recovery and will be ready for adoption in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

“They’re getting more comfortable and more quickly and playing around like that,” said Finley.

One of the Kittens needs to have an Eye Surgery that will cost over a thousand dollars. If you’d like to donate you can visit AnimalFriendsRescue.org.

Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Almost 1,000 Incidents of Cruelty Cases Every Week

The Scottish SPCA (SSPCA) has revealed shocking figures showing the charity last year dealt with almost 1,000 incidents a week, 8% more than in 2010.

The SSPCA also saw the number of animals in their care leap from 12,600 to 13,437, while calls to their helpline remained extremely high at 180,556, just under 500 a day.

Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, “The 50,039 incidents we dealt with, which included investigations, rescues, abandonments and providing assistance, and the 13,437 animals we cared for was staggering and put a massive strain on our resources.

“It’s hard to be sure if cruelty itself is increasing as we also have to consider that our profile has never been higher and more people than ever before are aware of how we can help. What we can say is sheer volume is far from our only concern. While the majority of cases we investigate are the result of ignorance rather than outright cruelty, last year sadly demonstrated once again that there is no limit to how far some people will go to abuse animals”.

Kittens That Survived Being Thrown Off A Bridge

Flynn adds “Horrific cases included a dog that was dumped in a garden in Edinburgh after his owner left him to starve to death, two kittens tied up in a plastic bag and thrown off a bridge in the Borders and a family of swans who suffered multiple injuries after an airgun attack in West Lothian. We also rescued lots of small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs who had been dumped outdoors like rubbish, many in extremely poor health”.

“We are very thankful for the support we receive and we believe Scotland is still largely a nation of animal lovers. It is clear though that cruelty to animals is still a serious issue in this country” said Flynn.

Flynn continued to say, “
Our investigations last year resulted in 46 people being banned from keeping animals, 12 for life, which is seven more than the previous year. Four people were jailed, compared to one in 2010, and fines totalled more than £25,000.”

“We are pleased the number of life bans being issued has increased as this is the most effective way of preventing animals from suffering at the hands of people who have demonstrated they are not fit to be owners,” said Flynn. “Life bans in particular also send a strong signal that owning an animal is a privilege and not a right. The courts may also see fit to impose custodial sentences and it was only right that the Reid brothers of Aberdeen were jailed last year for dog fighting.”

“David and Colin Reid became the first people to be convicted of animal fighting under Section 23 of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act following our investigation and their punishment serves as a warning to anyone else involved in such bloodthirsty and barbaric activities.”

CS Flynn emphasised that “we are continuing to invest in both our frontline and in education in particular. Last year we opened our new animal rescue and rehoming centre in Aberdeenshire and we’re close to completing our National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Clackmannanshire,” he said. These are both major developments and will help ensure we are able to meet the ever-increasing demands we face” he said.

“Prevention itself is also at the heart of our work and we have been delighted with the success of our free education programme which reached more than 60% of primary schools and over 160,000 children in 2011. It is vital that we continue to encourage children to treat animals with the care and respect they deserve and we are confident we’ll see the benefits in the years to come”.

“We will continue to meet the challenges 2012 brings and with the support of the Scottish public we will do all we can for every abused, abandoned, sick and injured animals in need of our help.” said Mike Flynn.

China Bear Farms Horrific Conditions

Chinese Doctors To Call For ‘Cruel’ Bear Farms To Be Closed

China’s bear farms, where for decades bile has been extracted from the endangered animals in horrific conditions, have been condemned by eminent Chinese scientists.

On the farms, the bears are milked for their bile through crude holes cut into the abdomen wall and the gall bladder

His conclusions will delight campaigners who for years have fought against the farms and freed hundreds of bears from captivity.

They claim that opposition to the industry is growing as China’s burgeoning middle class become increasingly opposed to such cruelty.

Dr Feng will warn the World Traditional Chinese Medicine Congress conference, however, that opponents face a hard battle with traditionalists who remain convinced that real bear bile can help cure many ailments including stomach and digestive disorders and kidney problems. Many people, including government officials, will refuse to accept substitutes, he will say.

On the farms, the bears – mostly Asiatic Black Bears – are kept in tiny, cramped cages and milked for their bile through crude holes cut into the abdomen wall and the gall bladder.

The wounds are deliberately left open, leaving the bears exposed to infection and disease. They are kept hungry and denied free access to water because this helps produce more bile.

Throughout parts of China, some 10,000 endangered Asiatic black bears are currently housed in tiny, restrictive metal cages where they are systematically 'milked' of bile, a digestive fluid produced in the gallbladder which is believed to have medicinal qualities in some Asian traditions.

The farms are still found in many parts of China and other Asian countries, fuelling poaching and illegal trade in the animals.

Dr Feng’s research shows that herbal alternatives and bile from other animals such as cattle – which can be collected cheaply at abbatoirs – can be more effective than Bear Bile.

He will argue that growing opposition to animal substitutes will mean that, eventually, only plant substitutes will be acceptable.

“The final choice will have to be to use plants to substitute bear bile,” he will tell the conference at Central Hall.

“Completely replacing the real one in chemical compositions is really difficult, but it is possible and we are close to proving the reality which is that the pharmacological effects of the substitute are better than those of the real one.”

Animal welfare campaigners point to growing opposition to the farms inside China. Earlier this year the owner of one of the biggest bear bile farms in China – who also owns a large pharmaceutical company – sparked protests in China when he applied for approval to list his company on a stock exchange.

Another speaker at the conference, Toby Zhang, of the charity Animals Asia, said:

“There has been a groundswell of public opinion against bear bile farming which shows that the Chinese people are increasingly concerned about animal welfare issues. Now even tradtional medicine doctors are advising against the use of bear bile.”

Jill Robinson, the English founder and chief executive of the Animal Asia Foundation Charity, which has a sanctuary for rescued Bears in China, said:

“Bears are dying in droves across the country in conditions that are just as horrendous as they were when we began rescuing bears in 1995. This appalling trade has to end.”

“There are over 54 different herbal alternatives and man-made synthetics that can take their place. No one is going to die from a lack of bear bile.”

In December 2009, 19 of China’s mainland provinces committed to becoming bear farm free. Another province, Shandong, closed its last bear farm in 2010.

But there is growing concern that the bear bile trade is still widespread throughout Asia.

The Chinese government estimates that there are currently between 7,000 and 10,000 bears kept for their bile in China. There are an estimated 16,000 Asiatic bears living in the wild.

A report in May by TRAFFIC, the wildlife monitoring network, found that poaching and illegal trade of bears, “continues unabated”, and on a large scale, mostly in China, but also in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

The most common products on sale were pills and whole bear gall bladders where the bile secreted by the liver is stored.

International trade in the bears, and their parts and derivatives, is prohibited under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The report found that the ban was widely flouted. Domestic trade of bear bile is legal but regulated in China and Japan and illegal in other countries.

Bear bile has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 3,000 years.

Until about 30 years ago, the only way to acquire bear bile was by killing a wild animal and removing its gall bladder. In the early 1980s bear farms began appearing in North Korea and quickly spread to China.

Bears rescued from farms by Animals Asia are found to be suffering from liver cancer, blindness, shattered teeth and ulcerated gums. Contaminated bile from sick bears poses a threat to human health.

The campaign has won support from celebrities including Joanna Lumley, the actress. “Bear farming is a cruel and unnecessary practice,” she said.

“The bears are suffering and dying from liver cancers – and doctors in Asia are now urgently highlighting concerns for those who consume the diseased bile.”

Karen Mok, China’s biggest music star, said: “Animals deserve to live in a world without fear or suffering. We must all help the thousands of bears suffering terrible cruelty.”

Dr Jidong Wu, president of the UK association of traditional chinese medicine at Middlesex university, which prohibits the use of bear bile by its practitioners, said extracting bear bile was “inhumane and unethical” and “against the general principle and law of traditional Chinese medicine which emphasises keeping the balance between mankind and nature.”

6 Month Old Puppy Tortured

The Puppy That Refused To Die: Maggie May the Lurcher Survives Shocking Torture by Callous Thugs

  • Three ‘Thug’ Mates Admit Horrific Animal Cruelty
  • They Fractured Six-Month-Old’s Neck and Stabbed Her with Potato Peeler
  • But RSPCA Inspector says Maggie May is Happy Now

Shocking Cruelty: Maggie May was left in excruciating pain, but she is much happier now.

She was left for dead when thugs stamped on her head, fractured her neck and stabbed her with a potato peeler before throwing her over a fence.

But today Maggie May the lurcher is finally putting that horrific day behind her after a terrible case of animal cruelty.

She now happily walks on three legs – the sad result of torture at the hands of three callous brutes – but is now safe in a loving new home and amazingly trusting despite her ordeal.

Maggie May’s nightmare began when she was badly injured after being hit by a taxi.

Rather than rush her to a vet, her 18-year-old owner, Kieran Wynn, first tried his own brand of DIY treatment by attempting to patch her up with a splint made from chopsticks, red lace and Sellotape.

Then two friends came round to his home in Ferryhill, County Durham, and decided to finish her off.

Sick pals Kevin Varty and Andrew Painter first tried to kill the six-‑month-old pup by treading on her head and yanking her body, fracturing her neck.

When that failed, and with the puppy in excruciating pain, Painter began repeatedly stabbing her with a potato peeler in a frantic attempt to kill her.

Safe Now: 6 Months Old 3 Legged Maggie May pictured with RSPCA inspector Claire Wilson was left for dead by 3 thugs who stamped on her head, fractured her neck and repeatedly stabbed her with a potato peeler

Then, thinking they had killed her, she was bundled over a fence because they could not be bothered to bury her.

But it was that incompetence that saved her life because she was spotted by a passer-by.

Maggie May, now barely breathing, was taken to the RSPCA who got her the expert veterinary care she so badly needed – yet her recuperation still needed several weeks.

Andrew Painter

Kevin Varty

Justice was in part done when Varty, 43, of Ferryhill, and Painter, 32, of Spennymoor, were both jailed for 18 weeks and banned from keeping animals for life by Newton Aycliffe Magistrates, County Duham, England.

Wynn’s sentence was adjourned until later this month. All three admitted cruelty charges.

RSPCA inspector Claire Wilson said: ‘This is the most horrible and shocking case I have ever had to deal with, but Maggie May has gone through it and come out the other side.

‘She is a happy little dog now.’

If Slaughter Houses and Farm Sheds Had Glass Walls

Appalling Cruelty To Chickens, Turkey’s, Pigs, Pigglets, Cattle, Cows, Calfs, Fish and Dolphins.

Sir Paul McCartney Talks About “If Slaughter Houses  Had Glass Walls We Would All Be – Vegetarian”

Paul McCartney narrates and describes the appauling cruelty carried out on Animals on Farms and in Slaughter Houses. These are the Animals we get our meat from and you will find in any Supermarket, Fast Food Outlet or Farm Shop.

It is widely thought by the majority of people that they are happy to eat meat but don’t actually want to see the animal they are going to eat actually being killed.

When you sit down for your meal which includes meat or fish you don’t begin to think, I wonder how this animal was killed. If we did though, we would probably rightly assume, it was killed humanly. So we are all clear, when we say humanly, we mean killed by a human in the most painless way possible. Which should mean in these times, by adhering to working within the stricktists Guidlines that must be in place including clear rules, regulations on Animal Welfare, the technology, facilities and equipment available, be instant and painless.

The Unthinkable Cruelty is Happening To Animals

But let’s say you knew in order to eat what was in front of you an Animal whether it was a Chicken, Turkey, Pig, Cattle, Cow, Fish or Dolphin had been Terribly Beaten, Horrendously Abused, Unbelievable Pain Inflicted, Housed and Transported in Appalling Conditions, Intolerable Acts of Brutality and if all that was not enough to be Tortured and left for Dead at the point of Slaughter (Being Killed in a Slaughter House).

On farms Animals Suffer the most terrible conditions from birth in which they live, are treated and handled. In the Slaughter House Animals prior to Killing are tortured, abused and handled in the most cruel ways imaginable. At the time of Killing, Animals are not Killed Properly and are left for dead, in other words where the Animal should be Dead it is not. It is left with the most unthinkable, appalling and sickening injuries. These same Animals with Heads hanging off, Guts hanging out they are still Alive in Severley Wounded Writhing in Agony. Animals on Hooks that should be stunned are still freely moving around as their throats are cut and left screaming as they Bleed to Death.

Society Turning a Blind Eye To Animal Cruelty!

Why the people that carry out these acts are not behind bars. Why these Farms are not shut down and farmers prosecuted and Abbatoirs closed the Agriculture Departments, Police, Vets and other Workers are turning a blind eye because many people don’t care, don’t want to know or just don’t know.

If you are one of those people, you have now been given a small insight into what really happens to Animals. This Article began with the words glass walls, well if all farms and slaughter houses had glass walls two things would happen. The first,  Animals would not be treated in such unthinkable ways. The second,  we would be, we would all be Vegaterians.

But these places don’t have glass walls and this is your opportunity to see past these walls and face up to what is going on.

Man Jailed After Convicted of Animal Cruelty

Eric Buckley was also banned at Pontypridd Magistrates’ Court from keeping animals for life.

Last month he and his wife Doreen were convicted of animal cruelty, including keeping a pony and goats in their cellar, and breaching previous bans.

The couple, who were living in a former pub in Gilfach Goch, had 24 animals in their cellar, the court was told.

The court heard it was a case of prolonged neglect and the animals had been confiscated.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Buckley earlier on Friday after he initially failed to appear for sentencing.

The pony found in the cellar
The pony found in the Buckleys’ cellar

His 46-year-old wife had been taken to hospital suffering from chest pains. Her sentencing was adjourned for a week.

They had admitted five charges of causing unnecessary suffering and two for breaching banning orders.

RSPCA inspectors told last month’s hearing at Pontypridd Magistrates’ Court that conditions were some of the worst they had ever seen.

They had already been banned from keeping dogs for 10 years due to animal welfare breaches in 1993.

After more serious breaches in 1995 both were banned from keeping all animals for life.

Monique McKevitt, for Buckley, told the court on Friday the couple had been on the way to court when Mrs Buckley suffered either an angina or a heart attack.

She said she talked to Buckley on the phone that morning while he was outside a hospital accident and emergency unit.

“She was taken in an ambulance this morning to the Royal Gwent Hospital (Newport),” she told the court.

“It is a possible heart attack, a potentially life-threatening condition, and he is extremely worried about her.”

One of the 11 Grey Hounds Found in Unlit Cellar

Several animals were rescued from Eric Buckley’s home in a poor state

But District judge Jill Watkins said: “Apart from the obvious bond between husband and wife, there is no real reason why he should not answer bail.”

The couple previously appeared before magistrates in Kingston upon Thames, where they were living at the time.

RSPCA inspector Nicola Johnston said it was “beyond anything” she had seen before, after finding nine geese, two goats, a pony, as well as 11 dogs and a cat at the property in June 2010.

The charges the couple faced related in particular to four dogs which were found to be suffering flea infestations, ear infections and oral disease.

At one point up to 13 retired racing greyhounds had the run of the property, which they used as a toilet.

Most though were kept in an unlit cellar, which was almost an inch deep in animal waste.

Ms Johnston said when Eric Buckley was approached about the conditions and asked why he kept so many animals, he answered: “Why not?”

Dogs Die in Hot Cars

Don’t Leave Your Dog Alone in a Car.

Dogs die in hot carsIf it’s very warm outside and you’re going out in the car, think very carefully about what you are going to do with your dog. You should never leave a dog alone in a car.

It can get unbearably hot in a car on a sunny day, even when it’s not that warm. In fact, when it’s 22°C/72°F outside, the temperature inside a car can soar to 47°C/117°F within 60 minutes.

Unlike humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool. In a hot stuffy car, dogs can’t cool down – leaving a window open or a sunshield on your windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough. Dogs die in hot cars.

Under the Animal Welfare Act you now have a legal duty to care for your animal and if you put your animal at risk, you could face prosecution. You would also have to live with the fact that your thoughtless action resulted in terrible suffering for your pet.

If you see a dog in a car on a warm day please call the Police on 999. For more information read our FAQ.

Heatstroke – early warning signs

Heatstroke can be fatal. Do everything you can to prevent it.
Some dogs are more prone to heatstroke. For example, dogs with short snouts, fatter or heavily muscled dogs and long-haired breeds, as well as very old or very young dogs. Dogs with certain diseases are more prone to heatstroke, as are dogs on certain medication.

If dogs are unable to reduce their body temperature, they will develop heatstroke. There are some signs to look for:

  • heavy panting
  • profuse salivation
  • a rapid pulse
  • very red gums/tongue
  • lethargy
  • lack of coordination
  • reluctance or inability to rise after collapsing
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • loss of consciousness in extreme circumstances.

Heatstroke – first aid

If your dog shows any symptoms of heatstroke, move him/her to a shaded, cool area and ring your vet for advice immediately. Heatstroke can be fatal and should always be treated as an emergency.

Dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature gradually lowered:

  • Immediately douse your dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock – you could put your dog in a shower and run cool water over him/her, or use a spray filled with cool water and place your dog in the breeze of a fan.
  • Let your dog drink small amounts of cool water.
  • Continue to douse your dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle – never cool your dog so much that he/she begins to shiver.

Once you have cooled your dog down you should take him/her straight to the veterinary surgery.

Top tips for warm weather

  • Your dog should always be able to move into a cooler, ventilated environment if he/she is feeling hot.

  • Never leave your dog alone in a car. If you want to take your dog with you on a car journey, make sure that your destination is dog-friendly – you won’t be able to leave your dog in the car and you don’t want your day out to be ruined!
  • If you have to leave your dog outside, you must provide a cool shady spot where he/she can escape from the sun at all times of the day.
  • Make sure your dog always has a good supply of drinking water, in a weighted bowl that can’t be knocked over. Carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts.
  • Never leave your dog in a glass conservatory or a caravan. Even if it is cloudy when you leave, the sun may come out later in the day and make it unbearably hot.
  • Groom your dog regularly to get rid of excess hair. Give long-coated breeds a haircut at the start of the summer, and later in the season, if necessary.
  • Dogs need exercise – even when it is hot. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather.
  • Dogs can get sunburned too – particularly those with light-coloured noses or light-coloured fur on their ears. Ask your vet for advice on pet-safe sunscreen.

Dog Drowned in River Attached To Heavy Metal Vice.

RSPCA official logoRSPCA Appeal After Drowned Dog Found in River Ouse

The vice that was used to weigh down the dog

RSPCA inspectors said the vice was a heavy duty tradesman’s vice

The body of a drowned dog has been found weighted down in a North Yorkshire river.

The animal was discovered in the River Ouse near Overton by staff from the RSPCA in York on Tuesday.

Officers described the male Staffordshire bull terrier cross as elderly, of a creamy colour with a docked tail.

The dog was found in the water, attached to a canvas bag containing a heavy duty metal vice.

Insp Gill Corder said: “The vice was extremely heavy and we think it was used to pull this poor animal under the water and drown him.

“It would have been a horrible way to die, and whoever did this is guilty of vile and completely unnecessary cruelty.”

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the RSPCA.
