James Backus – Cat’s Killing Leads To Cohoes, Albany, New York, USA Man’s Arrest

ALBANY, NEW YORK — A Cohoes man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly killed a cat by slamming its head into the sidewalk along South Pearl Street.

James Backus, 44, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty following an investigation that began after officers were told by another person that Backus had just killed a cat near the intersection of South Pearl and State streets, Albany Police spokesman Steven Smith said.

He said Backus allegedly picked up the cat by the tail and struck its head against the concrete four or five times. Backus then placed the cat, which was allegedly lying injured in the road after being hit by a car, in a city garbage can, Smith said.

Backus was arraigned Wednesday in city court and bail was set at $15,000, but a city court judge released Backus on his own recognizance.

Science Advisor says Badger Cull Plan is a ‘Crazy Scheme’

The Scientist whose Research is being cited by the UK Government to Justify its Plan to Cull (KILL) Badgers in England has described the scheme as “Crazy”.

Lord Krebs spoke to BBC News after the government’s environment advisory body Natural England has issued a culling licence to a consortium of landowners in Gloucestershire.

The cull is intended to control the spread of TB in cattle.

The scientist whose research is being cited by the government to justify its plan to cull badgers in England has described the scheme as “crazy”.

Lord Krebs spoke to BBC News after the government’s environment advisory body Natural England has issued a culling licence to a consortium of landowners in Gloucestershire.

The cull is intended to control the spread of TB in cattle.

Some badgers can carry TB and pass it on to cattle

Both groups will then have to show that they can pay for the culling and shoot them in sufficient numbers before full licences are granted. BBC News has been told that these could be issued in three weeks and intensive culling could begin immediately.

The culls will be monitored by an independent group for a period of six weeks. If the body is satisfied that the culls are effective and humane it will advise ministers to continue the trials for four years.

This would pave the way for further applications. Natural England will issue a maximum of 10 licences each year – with future culls.

The culls are intended to reduce TB in cattle by some 16% over nine years in the immediate area. Across England though the effect is much smaller, around 5%.

The aim of the pilot schemes is to assess the effectiveness of the government’s plan to slow down the spread of TB in cattle in England. The Welsh government has opted for a system of vaccination while Scotland is officially TB-free.

The plan is based on the results of a nine-year trial which showed that the spread of the disease could be slowed slightly if more than 70% of badgers in an area could be eradicated. If it was less than 70% – the spread of TB to cattle might even increase.

But the scientist who carried out the study has told BBC News that these pilot studies make no sense.

Lord Krebs, who is one of the government’s most respected scientific advisers, said that the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), which is administering the scheme, has no way of knowing how many badgers there are in the area, so will not know when they’ve killed 70% of the badgers in the area.

“I would go down the vaccination and biosecurity route rather than this crazy scheme that may deliver very small advantage, may deliver none. And it’s very hard to see how Defra are going to collect the crucial data to assess whether it’s worth going ahead with free shooting at all,” he said.

Defra has said that it would be using data from previous studies and would commission its own research to estimate badger numbers.

According to Prof Sir Robert Watson, a former science adviser to Defra, which is overseeing the process, culling alone will not solve the problem.

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson- 'Badger culling alone not a solution'

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson- ‘Badger culling alone not a solution’

Former science advisor Prof Robert Watson: ‘Badger culling alone not a solution’

“Culling won’t solve the problem nationally (across England),” he told BBC News in a recent interview.

“But farmers in Devon, Cornwall and Gloucestershire are arguing that it can get between a 16% and 20% reduction which they think is significant and that they are willing to pay for.”

The culls are paid for by local groups of farmers and carried out by private contractors. Prof Watson said that he himself questioned whether the cost of the culls would be economically worthwhile.

“I would say the economics is very close as to whether it is worth it. But the government has made a decision that (it should be tried if farmers are willing to fund it),” he said.

“The question (then) is: ‘Is it a significant effect? Is it cost effective? Is it socially and ethically appropriate?”

The Pilot Areas

  • West Gloucestershire pilot area description: mainly in the county of Gloucestershire, predominantly within the council districts of the Forest of Dean and Tewkesbury, and parts lie within the districts of Wychavon, Malvern Hills and the south east part of the county of Herefordshire. The area does not include the public forest estate in the Forest of Dean.

  • West Somerset pilot area description: located in the county of Somerset. The application area predominantly lies within the council district of West Somerset and part lies within the district of Taunton Deane.

  • Source: Natural England

Animal welfare and wildlife campaigners have opposed the cull, which will allow wild badgers to be shot when they come out at night, but lost their fight in the High Court last week.

Defra says the action is necessary to protect cattle from bovine TB, which leads to the slaughter of thousands of cattle each year.

Defra Minister David Heath said: “Our priority has always been to ensure that any culling of badgers is carried out in a safe, humane and effective way.

“The licence for Gloucestershire issued by Natural England today meets all the strict criteria we imposed, and the pilot in this area will help us assess the effectiveness of controlled shooting before we look at a wider roll out to control the spread of bovine TB in cattle.

“No one wants to kill badgers but the science is clear that we will not get on top of this disease without tackling it in both wildlife and cattle.”

Plans to begin culling in Wales were recently abandoned in favour of a vaccination policy. There are no proposals to cull badgers in Scotland, where TB incidence is low.

Sir David Attenborough in Anti-Badger Cull Christmas Number One Bid

Sir David Attenborough has been enlisted by the producers of a charity single in the battle for the Christmas number one.

The wildlife documentary maker appears in the video for the song, The Present of Life, which is being launched by BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham and is part of a campaign against plans for a Badger Cull.

The video features Packham on drums and weather forecaster Michael Fish on guitar. Rob da Bank, the Radio 1 DJ, also appear in the clip. The song is produced by eco-friendly clothing firm Rapanui.

The single is being sold on iTunes from December 7 to raise money for the Badger Trust, which campaigns against badger culling.

Packham said: “The battle for the coveted Christmas number one spot is always tough but one we are ready for. It will be difficult going up against the X-Factor but we’ll give it a good shot. It would be an amazing achievement.”

Rob Drake-Knight, from eco-friendly clothing firm Rapanui, said: “It was a great coup getting the likes of Chris and David on side. Hopefully they can help us to hit the number one spot and stop the badger cull at the same time.”

Sir David Attenborough

Sir David Attenborough

Sir David, 86, has previously spoken out against a badger cull, saying it could make the problem of cattle disease worse.

The purpose of the planned cull would be to control bovine tuberculosis. Farmers claim badgers spread the cattle disease and want permission to kill the protected woodland species.

But in an interview last year, Sir David said: “You may think culling [badgers] is the answer and it sounds easy to start with but it can very well make things much worse.

“At the moment TB is localised. If you kill all those badgers what happens then? Firstly those survivors will go out and carry the disease to areas that were hitherto unaffected.

“Other badgers slowly colonise and are infected themselves. There is good scientific research available to show culling badgers can make things worse not better.”

Plans for the cull, due to have taken place this year, were postponed until 2013 after more badgers than anticipated were found in two areas selected for pilot trials, in Gloucestershire and Somerset.

Couple Arrested For Animal Cruelty and Child Abuse

Couple Jeff O’Neil and Jennifer Kovacs Arrested For 300 Counts of Animal Cruelty and Child Abuse.

OLDSMAR, Florida USA  – A woman who shared her home with 300 Animals, which the Tampa Bay SPCA took away Sunday 6th January 2013, is reacting to the incident.

Joyce Kovacs said she is glad the Animals are gone.

They belonged to her daughter, Jennifer, and her daughter’s boyfriend, Jeffrey O’Neil, who lived with Joyce.

Jeff O’Neil and Jennifer Kovacs were arrested for Child Abuse and Animal Cruelty.

“I’m kind of devastated, you know. I guess I feel bad for Jennifer and Jeff that they’re sitting in jail, and yet they brought this all on themselves,” said Joyce.

Animals — including snakes, lizards, and rats — were taken from the home along the 200 block of Lee Street after deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call there about a missing infant.

Joyce said it was the couple’s daughter, who a relative had come and taken away. According to deputies, a family member came to the house, saw the Child was Crying, but couldn’t wake O’Neil. The relative left a note, which Jennifer and O’Neil didn’t see.

That’s when deputies saw all the Animals being held in 88 Cages. They described the home as being in ” Deplorable Conditions.”.

Some Animals were even found ‘Dead’ and ‘Half Eaten by the Other Animals’.

According to Deputies, they were being Bred and Sold without the Proper Licensing and Conditions.

The SPCA Tampa Bay was called and they took all of the 300 Animals.

Joyce said her daughter and O’Neil sold some of the Animals at flea markets or over the Internet, but the breeding got out of control. She added it’s been that way for the past year.

She said she told Jennifer and O’Neil they would have to leave the house soon, just recently. Joyce said she put up with it for so long for the sake of her granddaughter, because the couple had nowhere else to go.

All of the Animals are in the care of Tampa Bay SPCA now.

According to the organisation, they will try to get the owners to sign the Animals over to them. If not, the SPCA will have to file for custody.

Brian May: Me and My Animal Passions

He is one the World’s Best Guitarists

He’s written some of the most memorable rock anthems of all time, and his band ‘Queen’ is a Global Phenomenon. But it’s not music he wants to be remembered for his Animal Welfare Work – Saving Badgers and Foxes.

Brian May: ‘The day the first shot is fired against the Badgers, I will never drink another drop of milk unless I know it’s come from a humane farm.’

When Queen performed at the closing ceremony of the Olympics – Freddie Mercury, towering over the crowd in canary-yellow jacket, leading a call-and-response from beyond the grave, Brian May, crowned in his wonky halo of grey curls, squalling his way through the guitar solo from Brighton Rock, and drummer Roger Taylor, with guest Jessie J, thundering into a rendition of We Will Rock You – they did what they always managed to do so spectacularly live: unite a stadium in belting out an anthem.

Brian May, Guitarist and Roger Taylor, Drummer of the British Rock Band ‘Queen’, performs during the Closing Ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Sunday, 12th August 2012, in London.

They – well May – also managed to do something new: infuriate a significant percentage of the populace. The trouble was his outfit: a characteristic combination of dark trousers, trainers and long frock coat, except from one sleeve peered the head of a fox; from the other, the black and white snout of a badger.

“He’s politicising the Olympics!” came the cry, from those who made the connection between his attire and his campaign against the government’s then imminent approval of pilot badger culls in Gloucester and Somerset.

“To the farmers struggling against bovine TB and Fox predation,” harrumphed the Countryside Alliance, “a millionaire rock star using a global sporting celebration to undermine their way of life really stuck in the craw.”

A spokesperson for Brian May said his jacket was in keeping with Danny Boyle’s Isles of Wonder theme, including, as it did, a hedgehog, a buzzard, two herons and an adder, “most of which are protected or in decline” – which was plausible, up to a point.

For it is true that Brian May is on a mission.

“All the available scientific evidence points to the fact that the cull probably will not work,” he says now, sitting in a hotel bar in Kensington.”

“It will not save a single cow. It might do, but it’s a huge unknown – a huge extrapolation, and extrapolation of scientific evidence is a very dangerous game.”

His voice is soft, languid in the way of someone accustomed to being listened to.

“If you talk to any expert on cows and bovine TB in Britain, bar a couple who work for Defra [Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs], you will get the same answer, including from Lord Krebs.”

Krebs led the only major scientific trial of culling, a £50m study known as the randomised Badger Culling or Krebs trial, which culled 11,000 Badgers over Five Years and found that if certain conditions were met, culling could reduce disease incidence by an average of just 16% over nine years.

“Krebs said Culling is a crazy idea, we should not be doing it, we should be vaccinating,” adds May. “So I’m not a lone voice. I’m not a renegade hippy.”

On Friday afternoon, a petition he has launched with Team Badger, a coalition of various Animal Rights Groups, had more than 134,000 signatures, well in excess of the 100,000 required to get a debate considered in parliament.

(The coalition includes Brian May’s own anti-animal cruelty organisation, established when he realised, in 2010, that David Cameron would try to repeal the anti-hunting act. It is called, with the unapologetic sentimentality that imbues the songs he wrote for Queen, Save Me, and marked the end of his life-long support for the Tory party.)

British Prime Minister David Cameron will try to Repeal the Anti-Hunting Act

British Prime Minister David Cameron will try to Repeal the Anti-Hunting Act

May is working on the campaign around the clock, talking to scientists, emailing activists, doing interviews, updating his website.

“It’s threatening my life, it’s utterly consuming my life. It makes it difficult to continue a proper family life, it makes it difficult to continue music, to continue astronomy, to continue my stereoscopic adventures.”

May is, famously, unusual in the rock firmament in that he possesses a PhD in astronomy, and has written books about it (the most recent, The Cosmic Tourist, written with Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott, will be published next month) and another obsession, stereoscopy.

“So I suppose I solve the problem by not sleeping very much.” He says his friends, largely, support his campaign, but that his wife, Anita Dobson – though helping with the petition, “has at times made me question whether I should be spending this much time on it”.

As we talk, his eye is suddenly caught by a scene behind us, and his voice hardens. “Sorry, excuse me, are you having trouble, Anne?” Anne is Anne Brummer, of Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue Centre in Surrey, who has rescued thousands of Animals over the past 25 years and has released many of them on to his land. A waiter has been trying to explain to Anne that the bar is not yet open. “Who says? Can we talk to your manager please?” The gentle tone is suddenly gone; in its place is the full force of rock star high-handedness.

Ann Brummer goes out on most of the rescues herself and also carries out educational work

Ann Brummer goes out on most of the rescues herself and also carries out educational work

He turns back to me. “Sorry, I hate people who say things can’t be done.” His tone is avuncular again, expansive. “It must be in my upbringing.” In what way? “Well, my parents thought we were middle class”

Brian’s father, when May was a teenager helped him build the guitar he still uses out of motorbike valve springs, a mahogany fireplace, a bike saddle, and mother-of-pearl buttons from his mother’s button box, was an electronics draughtsman in the civil service –

“but we were very poor. They had a pride in doing things well. Life is too short for people who don’t want to do their job well.”

Speaking of jobs, it’s understandable, isn’t it, if farmers feel that it is all very well for someone in a comfortable position …

“I’m not in a comfortable position,” interjects May. “This is killing me!”

I look for a trace of irony, but it doesn’t appear to be there.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Rock stars shouldn’t have anything to say about farming. Well, sorry, it’s time to wake up. Farming, like every other industry, including mine, has to be open to change or it dies. … [And] if the price of my glass of milk on the table, or my cheese is the death of possibly hundreds of thousands of badgers, I don’t want it. I like me milk, I like me cheese, but the day the first shot is fired by the government against the badgers, I will never drink another drop of milk unless I know it’s come from a humane farm.”

Cow, Milk, Cheese and Farmer

Cow, Milk, Cheese  and Farmer

But that, as even some Anti-Cull Activists admit, is just punishing farmers further.

“No, it’s not. It’s giving people the right to choose who to support.”

What is it about him and animals, exactly? Where does this passion come from?

“It’s a childhood thing, but it’s been reinforced by the life I’ve led. I’m an astronomer.”

Even when he was touring the world with Queen, May kept up with the academic journals. He has an asteroid named after him, has spent months chasing eclipses from Mexico to Outer Mongolia, and periodically appears on the Sky at Night with his friend Patrick Moore.

“For a thousand years the Ptolemaic system was believed all round the world. The system says that the Earth is at the centre of the universe. It turns out not to be true. But this idea that we are the centre of creation lingers on – where is the justification to say we are the central piece of evolution? There is nothing to tell us that whatsoever. So why would we use that to justify our exceedingly bad behaviour?”

In fact, he said, a couple of years ago, that he would rather be remembered for his animal rights work than for music or astronomy. Really? “Yep. I won’t be remembered in 1,000 years anyway, but I would like to leave this planet knowing that I did what I could to make it a better place, a more decent place, a more compassionate place.”

Having said which, he doesn’t seem to find this campaigning lark that fulfilling.

“People say: ‘Are you enjoying it?’ No. I love my music, I love my art. And I’m quite good at it.”

Rolling Stone last year ranked him as 26th of the 100 best guitarists of all time.

“So really I should be making music – I have to have time – because if I lose music from my life, I lose my self.”

He is about to embark on a short tour with Kelly Ellis, accompanying her on acoustic guitar and performing by candlelight.

“It’s almost like a reaction to the music that made Queen famous, though if you look at it some of it’s very simple. We Will Rock You is very simple. Millionaire Waltz is highly complex.”

It is perhaps instructive – or maybe not – that May wrote We Will Rock You, while Freddie Mercury wrote The Millionaire Waltz: for all his obvious intelligence, there is something of the emotional bludgeon about May and his lyrics: they are obviously wildly effective – in 2006, Queen’s Greatest Hits became the best-selling album ever – but relatively uncomplicated (unlike his guitar solos): We Will Rock You. The Show Must Go On. I Want It All.

Musically, he and Freddie Mercury dovetailed brilliantly, but did he ever feel overshadowed and resentful of his flamboyantly gifted frontman? “No, we actually pushed him forward. It was me who designed that first cover and put him on [it]. That was my vision of what Queen’s image would be. Because Freddie was born to it. Though he was very democratic. People often said, in interviews, ‘This is your band’ – and he’d say, ‘Don’t be stupid, darling.'” May’s voice alters subtly, suddenly there’s another person in the room.

“This is a band.”

Queen's Freddie Mercury

Queen’s Freddie Mercury

What was it like, performing with Mercury again, albeit in the form of a hologram?

“It was nice. I mean, Freddie’s with us the whole time, really. Freddie’s spirit is very strong and we spent so much of our lives together, I can’t imagine a day where I wouldn’t refer to him in some way. I’m very comfortable with that now. I wasn’t in the beginning.”

In fact, he was so grief-stricken by the loss of his friend and colleague, which came at about the same time as the breakup of his first marriage and the death of his father, that he slipped into a severe depression.

“It was quite a long grieving process, but I’m comfortable with it now. He lived life to the full, he created magnificently, from his soul. He was fearless.”

During another period of depression, a suicidal episode, May went to a clinic in Arizona. “They said, ‘What is your religion, what is your spirituality?’ I said: ‘I’m not sure.’ And they said: ‘Well, we need your spirituality to be a centre for your recovery. And I kind of floundered around for a while and in the end it was looking at the stars that gave that feeling back to me.

“There’s a great thing called The Serenity Prayer,” he says. “It’s taught in all kinds of clinics – it starts off with the word God, but you can say Higher Power – ‘God, give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.'”

He delivers the homily as if it is not cross-stitched and stuck up on wall after wall throughout the world. “To me that’s incredibly empowering and very often if I get to a sort of trough, that’s what I look at. It focuses you on the things which you can change.” And he stands up to his full 6ft 2in, plus a good five inches or so of hair, and wanders off to be photographed. From the lapel of his frock coat, a badger winks.

Chris Packham Slams ‘Puerile’ Abuse of Animals on I’m a Celebrity

Bushtucker Trials are a ‘Farce’ because ‘Venomous’ Creatures are Disabled to Protect Celebrities.

Chris Packham

NATURALIST Chris Packham has attacked the ITV reality show I’m a Celebrity for its “out-dated and puerile abuse of animals”.

The Springwatch star slammed the show’s so-called ‘Bushtucker trials’, in which a hapless Z-list celebrity is chosen to perform a task – generally involving close contact with slimy, venomous or toothy animals – in return for food.

Packham called the trials a “Pathetic Farce”, noting that none of the Celebrities is ever in any danger:

“The Tiny Crocodiles have their mouths gagged, the spiders have their fangs covered or removed, the snakes are non-venomous and the whole area has been drenched in insecticide so the poor things don’t get too pestered by biting insects.”

Packham has spent his career on TV shows that celebrate wildlife. His no-nonsense views on conservation – such as his belief that pandas should be allowed to go extinct because the money could be better spent elsewhere – have won him as much respect as his refusal to dumb down the science in his programmes.

Packham said he “dreads this time of year” because of I’m a Celebrity. His own live Springwatch and Autumnwatch shows on the BBC could be described as a rather more staid form of reality TV. But Packham says it isn’t I‘m a Celebrity‘s format he minds: just the show’s “Idiotic, Out-Dated and Puerile Abuse of Animals”.

Referring to his own TV shows, he says: “We don’t just go for the cute and cuddly, we champion the ugly and unpopular too and I work really hard to win new audiences over to the wonder and real value of nature.”

In contrast, Packham believes I’m a Celebrity promotes “medieval-style exploitation”. He asks: “Why not flog, birch, tar and feather or hang, draw and quarter the contestants as well?

“After all, these practices date from the same periods when animal baiting was popular entertainment.”·

Humane Program Working With Juvenile Detention Centre To Stop Animal Cruelty

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is reaching out to at-risk youth to educate them about the proper care of animals and hopefully stop the cycle of Animal Cruelty.

The Humane Society was able to start the program in October thanks to a $44,000 grant from the James A. and Faith Knight Foundation.

The Humane Society of Huron Valley investigates approximately 500 reports of Animal Cruelty each year.

“It is well documented that early Abusers of Animals often go on to engage in Violence and other Antisocial acts,” said Karen Patterson, director of Humane Education.

The Humane Society is hoping to help break the cycle of animal abuse by reaching out to at-risk youth.

Every Sunday Karen Patterson and Alex Ball go to the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They teach the kids there how to Care for Pets and give them an opportunity to interact with one of the Shelter Dogs.

The Program covers topics on Pet Safety, Animal Communication, Caring for Pets at Home, showing Respect and Compassion for Animals and Dog Cruelty.

The Humane Society hopes the program will benefit the troubled youth. “Our goals are to educate, and we want to rehabilitate too,” said Ball.

“We want to show we have Animals here that are always Compassionate. They Don’t Judge, They Don’t see Jumpsuits, and they Want to be loved.”

The kids at the centre love the program. “It’s a nice treat for them,” said Youth Counselor Kevin Lockhart.

The kids have been learning a lot from the program and have enjoyed having the Dogs around.

“It just gives you that warm, cuddly, comforting feeling that you can’t get from a human,” said 14-year-old Unique. “Dogs just have it, they just have that demeanor about them. It helps.”

Joanna Lumley Backs Long Distance Animal Transport Ban

Joanna Lumley wants to see a ban to long distance animal transportation

Compassion in World Farming, which launched its campaign in London’s Trafalgar Square, wants an end to “the horrors of the live export trade”.

It said 80,664 sheep, calves, pigs and goats were exported to the continent in 2011.

The only UK port used for live animal exports is Ramsgate, in Kent.

The National Farmers Union said shipments were strictly controlled.

‘Cramped Conditions’

A campaign against shipments from Ramsgate has been backed by Thanet District Council.

Ms Lumley said: “The numbers involved in live exports is shocking. While we are part of the EU, we are a country in our own right and we need to act on this now.

“2012 is the year to make a change. We need to raise the price at the ports, so that it is more profitable for farmers to have their animals slaughtered close to their own farms.”

She added: “They [animals] can’t get off, unlike human beings who can just ring the bell and jump off the bus once they’ve reached their short destination.”

Compassion in World Farming claimed it had found sheep being transported across Europe in cramped, overloaded trucks with no water.

But speaking in November, NFU spokesman Mr Frank Langrish, who raises Romney Marsh lamb in Winchelsea, East Sussex, said exports were strictly controlled.

“The vehicles they travel on are superb. They are fitted with drinkers and fans to control the temperature,” he said.

Sadistic Woman Violently Beats Puppy

California Woman Arrested Following Violent Attack On A Puppy

On Wednesday, a OakhurstMadera County, California, USA woman called ‘Janice Aguilar‘  was arrested by Police and placed behind bars for Repeatedly Beating and Slamming on the Ground a Young Labrador Puppy.

California Woman Janice Aguilar Violently Beats Puppy

Sadistic Janice Aguilar Violently Beats and Slams Puppy To The Ground

The Oakhurst woman was behind bars on Wednesday night after Authorities said “she Beat a Puppy So Badly That Even Veteran Law Enforcement Officials Were Shocked”.

According to witnesses, they claimed to have observed 39-year-old Janice Aguilar Beating a Puppy and Repeatedly Slamming its Small Body Into The Ground.

Following the beating, Aguilar was seen flagging down a car and leaving with the injured puppy, Madera County sheriff‘s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

According to the Police report, the driver of the vehicle attempted to take Aguilar to two different veterinary clinics in order for the puppy to be treated, but the Aguilar refused and asked to be dropped at a park instead.

Deputies were called by Aguilar’s neighbors in the Sierra Nevada foothills town of Oakhurst around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when they saw her beating the puppy and banging it on the ground, Stuart said,

Following the Sustained Beating before Deputies arrived Aguilar had already put the Injured Puppy described by Stuart as “Crying in Pain” into her backpack and flagged down a passing car. This had been according to witnesses who saw Aguilar Stuff The Puppy That Was Still Alive But Terrible Pain and Grievously Injured Puppy Into A Backpack.

The driver of the car drove Aguilar and the dog to the offices of two separate veterinarians, but according to Stuart, Aguilar refused to bring the puppy into either office for treatment. And, according to Stuart, after the second stop Aguilar asked to be dropped off at nearby park, got out of the car and walked away.

“The sick part of this, the witness could hear the dog whimpering, and assumed the woman wanted go to a vet,” Stuart said.

“Instead she got dropped off near a park,” Stuart said.

The Puppy, believed to be a Labrador mix only between 8 and 11 weeks old, was found by another witness who saw the Severe Pain the Puppy was in and thought it was beyond help and felt the only thing to do was to put the Poor Puppy out of its Terrible Pain and Misery, Madera County sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

I have dealt with Animal Neglect, but I have never Dealt with such an Extreme Case of Cruelty to an Animal,” Stuart said.

Aguilar, who told Deputies that the Puppy was attacked by a Pit Bull, was booked into Madera County Jail late Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of Animal Cruelty and Death.

Bail information, if any, and a Court Appearance Date was not available on Wednesday evening.

Witnesses have stated that the Puppy Was Still Crying In Pain.

Man Who Killed and ate A PUPPY

A  Man who KILLED and ATE a PUPPY in Front of Horrified Onlookers, Including a Five-Year-Old Child, Has Been Fined More Than $2500.

Daniel Thomas Adriaens from Fitzroy Crossing appeared in Fitzroy Crossing Magistrate’s Court yesterday before West Kimberley Magistrate Colin Roberts, who had previously described the incident as “abhorrent and shocking“, and the worst case of animal cruelty he had seen.

Adriaens, a chronic solvent sniffer living in a humpy near the Fitzroy River, pleaded guilty in September last year to ill-treating the animal but claimed he had killed it humanely.

The court was told that about 6pm on April 23, 2011, a passerby had heard a puppy yelping near the river and found Adriaens cutting its throat with a knife. By the time police attended, he had gutted and roasted it and cut off its ears, storing one in his backpack.

He told police he had done it because he was “starving hungry”.

Magistrate Roberts fined Adriaens $2500 plus costs for the charge of animal cruelty, and $500 plus costs for a charge regarding a burning permit.

Man Beat Small Dog To Death

Sadistic Man Arrested For Beating A Small Dog To Death

An 18-month-old Shih Tzu is dead and a 27-year-old man is behind bars following a brutal case of animal cruelty which took place on Sunday.

According to a story published Monday in the Intelligencer, police arrested Anthony Doyle of Wheeling, W. Va. on Sunday night after a witness reported seeing him attack a small dog and discard the body in nearby weeds.

The woman who claims to have witnessed the beating told the authorities that she saw Doyle hitting the little dog on the back porch of a residence, and then:

“Dive On The Small Dog and Punch It Until It Went Limp,”

The witness correctly identified to the authorities the location of where she saw Doyle discard the young Dog’s body.

The Shih Tzu apparently belonged to another woman who became “hysterical” when she entered her apartment and discovered blood splattered on the walls from her fatally injured dog.

Police noted that Doyle was also covered in blood, and appeared to be intoxicated.

Anthony Doyle is now facing felony animal cruelty for the dog’s death.

WHEELING – Police arrested Anthony Doyle Sunday night after he allegedly beat a small dog to death at a Wheeling Island residence and dumped its body in nearby weeds.

Ohio County Magistrate Charles Murphy on Monday arraigned Doyle, 27, of Wheeling on a felony charge of animal cruelty. As of late Monday, Doyle remained in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville in lieu of $25,000 cash bond.

According to a police report, officers went to the Island Grill parking lot around 9:30 p.m. Sunday to meet a woman who said she earlier witnessed Doyle beat the dog to death. The woman told police she heard a dog crying earlier that evening before she saw Doyle beating the animal on the back porch of a South Wabash Street residence.

About one hour later, the woman heard the dog crying again. She then saw Doyle “dive on the dog and punch it until it went limp,” the police report states. Doyle then dumped the dog’s body in a weeded area near the house, the witness told police.

Officers traveled to the scene of the alleged crime and found the deceased dog where the witness said Doyle had abandoned it. Animal control removed the dog from the scene.

The dog’s owner arrived at the scene after her downstairs neighbors called her to advise they had heard loud banging coming from her apartment.

She told officers she owned an 18-month-old Shih Tzu. After entering her home with police, the dog’s owner “went hysterical, because the house had blood spatter throughout the apartment,” the report states.

Officers found Doyle inside the apartment. His clothes were covered in blood, and he appeared to be intoxicated, police said. He reportedly denied any knowledge of how the dog had died.

The witness reportedly identified Doyle to officers as the man she had seen beating the dog. Police said Doyle had been staying at the home as a guest.

Children Who are Cruel to Animals: When To Worry

Childhood Animal Cruelty  Can Be Normal Or A Red Flag.

Disturbed by a high pitched cry, three year old Christopher’s mom walks in to the living room to find him swinging their new kitten around by the tail.  Five year John’s babysitter witnesses John repeatedly blowing a loud horn into his dog’s ear, laughing at the animal’s obvious distress.  Ten year old Liam’s older brother discovers him holding a lighter flame to the family guinea pig‘s foot.

Since the 1970″s, research has consistently reported childhood cruelty to animals as the first warning sign of later delinquency, violence, and criminal behavior.  In fact, nearly all violent crime perpetrators have a history of animal cruelty in their profiles.  Albert deSalvo, the Boston Strangler found guilty of killing 13 women, shot arrows through dogs and cats he trapped as a child.  Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold boasted about mutilating animals for fun.

At the same time, most parents have been upset by some form of childhood cruelty to animals – whether it’s pulling the legs off of a bug or sitting on top of a puppy.  We struggle to understand why any child would mistreat an animal.  And when should we worry?  Where’s the line between a budding serial killer like Jeffrey Dahmer and normal curiosity and experimentation?

Motivations Behind Animal Cruelty

Most commonly, children who abuse animals have either witnessed or experienced abuse themselves.  For example, statistics show that 30 percent of children who have witnessed domestic violence act out a similar type of violence against their pets. In fact, the link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence is so well-known that many U.S. communities now cross-train social-service and animal-control agencies in how to recognize signs of animal abuse as possible indicators of other abusive behaviors.

While childhood and adolescent motives for animal cruelty has not been well-researched, interviews suggest a number of additional developmentally related motivations:

  1. “Curiosity or exploration (i.e., the animal is injured or killed in the process of being examined, usually by a young or developmentally delayed child).
  2. Peer pressure (e.g., peers may encourage animal abuse or require it as part of an initiation rite).
  3. Mood enhancement (e.g., animal abuse is used to relieve boredom or depression).
  4. Sexual gratification (i.e., bestiality).
  5. Forced abuse (i.e., the child is coerced into animal abuse by a more powerful individual).
  6. Attachment to an animal (e.g., the child kills an animal to prevent its torture by another individual).
  7. Animal phobias (that cause a preemptive attack on a feared animal).
  8. Identification with the child’s abuser (e.g., a victimized child may try to regain a sense of power by victimizing a more vulnerable animal).
  9. Posttraumatic play (i.e., reenacting violent episodes with an animal victim).
  10. Imitation (i.e., copying a parent’s or other adult’s abusive “discipline” of animals).
  11. Self-injury (i.e., using an animal to inflict injuries on the child’s own body).
  12. Rehearsal for interpersonal violence (i.e., “practicing” violence on stray animals or pets before engaging in violent acts against other people).
  13. Vehicle for emotional abuse (for example, injuring a sibling’s pet to frighten the sibling),”

Animal Cruelty:  Are There Types of Abusers?

I’m not aware of any formal typologies that exist for children who abuse animals.  However, as a rule of thumb, it may be useful to use the following guidelines in trying to assess whether or not the problem is serious or can be easily addressed.  Caveat: These are general guiidelines and each situation should be evaluated individually.

The Experimenter:  (ages 1-6 or developmentally delayed).  This is usually a preschool child who has not developed the cognitive maturity to understand that animals have feelings are not to be treated as toys.  This may be the child’s first pet or s/he doesn’t have a lot of experience or training on how to take care of a variety of animals.

What to do:  To some extent, of course, this depends on the age and development of the child.  In general, though, explain to the child that it is not okay to hit or mistreat an animal, just as it’s not okay to hit or mistreat another child.  Humane education interventions (teaching children to be kind, caring, and nurturing toward animals) by parents, childcare providers, and teachers are likely to be sufficient to encourage desistence of animal abuse in these children,

The “Cry-for-Help” Abuser:  (6/7 – 12).  This is a child who intellectually understands that it is not okay to hurt animals.  This behavior is not due to a lack of education’ instead, the animal abuse is more likely to be a symptom of a deeper psychological problem.  As previously noted, a number of studies have linked childhood animal abuse to domestic violence in the home as well as childhood physical or sexual abuse.

What to do:  Seek professional assistance.  While I’m a big believer in parents’ abilities to weather many of the normal ups and downs of childrearing without professional assistance, this is an exception.  It is not “normal” for a child this age to intentionally mistreat an animal.

The Conduct-Disordered Abuser:  (12+)  Teens who abuse animals almost always engage in other antisocial behaviors – substance abuse, gang activities, Sometimes the animal abuse is in conjunction with a deviant peer group (an initiation rite or as a result of peer pressure), while other times it may be used as a way to alleviate boredom or achieve a sense of control.

What to do:  Get professional help immediately.  If possible, enlist the support of friends, family members, even teachers.

The Bottom Line

Every act of violence committed against an animal is not a sign that a person is going to turn out to be a homicidal maniac.  Particularly with young children, whose natural exuberance and curiosity can lead to some unpleasant experiences for their pets, it is fine to shrug off an occasional lapse in judgment while continuing to educate the child about humane animal treatment.

However, locking a pet inside a closed space, violently lashing out at a pet after getting in trouble with a parent, or taking pleasure in watching an animal in pain are all “red flags” that signal the need for professional intervention.  This is particularly true when the child has the cognitive maturity to understand that what s/he is doing is wrong – and repeatedly does it anyway.

Police and USPCA Rescue Hunt Stags

A Man Has Been Arrested After The ULSTER SOCIETY of PREVENTION of CRUELTY to ANIMALS (USPCA) and the POLICE SERVICE of NORTHERN IRELAND (PSNI) Seized a Vehicle and Trailer Containing Two Red Deer Stags Which, It Is Thought, Were About To Be Hunted.

The practice known as ‘Carting’ is Illegal and the Hunting Community has long maintained that it doesn’t exist.

PSNI and USPCA Rescue County Down Hunt Stags

The USPCA and PSNI Seized The Vehicle and Trailer

The trailer was registered to the County Down, Northern Ireland Hunt, but the Hunt Master said he “knew nothing about the events”. Although the animals’ antlers had been removed, a vet confirmed they were Red Deer Stags. The vet also said “they were tagged, indicating they had been reared on a farm”. However, the number which might identify exactly who had reared them had been scraped off the tag.

While it is Illegal to Breed Stags for Hunting, it is not Illegal to Hunt Stags in Northern Ireland. However, the practice is banned in the rest of the UK. Stag Hunting was recently outlawed in the Republic of Ireland. Stephen Philpott from the USPCA said “the County Down operation had confirmed the charity’s long-held suspicions”.

“The people that do it pretend that they don’t. They would have you believe that the Red Deer Stags they Hunt they have come across while out riding and that they are actually Wild Animals,” he said.

“We have believed for the last ten years that the animals aren’t wild, but were being bred somewhere and then being brought solely and purposefully to be hunted by dogs and men on horseback and unfortunately it looks as though we were right.”

Cruelty

For over a year the USPCA had been monitoring a group of people they believed were organising stag hunts in County Down. That surveillance led them to conclude that a hunt would start on Tuesday outside Loughbrickland.

Several 4×4 vehicles, horseboxes and horse lorries were observed arriving at the location where the hunt was believed to be starting from and then leaving.

It is believed the stags were to be hunted by dogs and horse riders

It Is Believed The Stags Were To Be Hunted By Dogs and Horse Riders

A woman approached the USPCA Inspector and asked him if he was there for the Hunt.

She then told him that her husband was a Master For The Hunt and that she had received a phone call to say that the Hunt was cancelled and that people should leave the area.

Mr Philpott said he believed that there had been a conspiracy to commit an Offence Under The Welfare of Animals Act.

“How can anyone else call it anything else other than cruelty,” he said.

  • “First of all there’s the stress they suffered in the back of that box, it was pitiful.
  • “And then to put them through another 20 miles of stress being chased by dogs horses and people. It needs to be put an end to.”

The stags were later released into the wild.
