Protection 4 Animals – Cold Weather Safety for Your Dog

Protection 4 Animals – Cold Weather Safety for Your Dog, Make Sure Their Safe and Warm for Winter.

If you live in a region where the winters are cold, then you probably have a yearly routine to prepare yourself for the season change. You might change out your wardrobe, get your car ready for winter, and insulate your home. Don’t forget to take precautions to keep your dog warm and healthy. There are plenty of winter hazards out there, such as antifreeze and ice. Take steps to keep your dog safe! Here are some cold weather tips to you and your dog this winter:

Do not leave your dog outside unsupervised without a heated shelter. Just because your dog has fur, it does not mean he can withstand the cold. Though some dog breeds (like Huskies and Malamutes) are better suited to cold weather, all dogs should have access to a warm shelter at all times. Most dogs do best living indoors. However, if your dog must live outdoors, provide a heated dog bed and adequate shelter.

Small dogs or those with little to no hair should have sweaters or jackets for protection against the cold. Some of the most common breeds that will benefit from protective clothing are Chihuahuas Miniature Pinschers Whippets and Greyhounds. Remember, not all dogs will tolerate clothing, so don’t push it – just make an extra effort to keep them out of the cold. Keep food and water in a place where they will not freeze – preferably inside! A heated dog bowl can help outdoor water and food from freezing.

Watch those feet! If your dog will tolerate it, consider foot protection booties. This can keep your dog’s feet safe from harm, such as dangerous objects hidden by the snow or salt on roads and walk ways. Additionally, booties can help give your dog a better grip and prevent slipping on ice.

Dog in Winter Snow

Dog in Winter Snow

When walking your dog near ice, use extra caution to avoid slipping. Always keep a close watch your dog and be sure he says nearby. Do not allow your dog to run across frozen bodies of water – he could fall into icy water if the ice is too thin!

If you use an indoor or outdoor fireplace, always keep a safety guard around it in order to protect your dog away from the flames and soot. Do not leave a fire unattended.

If your dog is in the cold and begins excessively shaking or shivering, get him back to warm shelter as soon as possible. If you suspect your dog is developing hypothermia, bring him to a vet immediately.

Avoid letting your dog eat snow or anything else on the ground. Dangerous objects or chemicals may be hidden in the snow. Also, eating snow this can cause stomach upset and even hypothermia. Always keep fresh room temperature water available at all times.

Beware antifreeze – It is highly toxic! Antifreeze tastes good to pets, but even a small amount can kill your dog. Though exposure to antifreeze is a risk all year, the risk is especially high during the colder months. Keep your eyes on your dog at all times – and keep antifreeze out of reach. If you suspect your dog has had ANY exposure to antifreeze, get to a vet right away.

In general, be sure to contact your vet if any abnormal behavior or signs of illness appear. Also, have a look at the cold weather checklist from the Veterinary Medicine guide.

Did you know that your dog’s normal temperature is a few degrees higher than yours? Winter is the perfect time of year to snuggle up – so have fun and stay warm!

James Backus – Cat’s Killing Leads To Cohoes, Albany, New York, USA Man’s Arrest

ALBANY, NEW YORK — A Cohoes man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly killed a cat by slamming its head into the sidewalk along South Pearl Street.

James Backus, 44, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty following an investigation that began after officers were told by another person that Backus had just killed a cat near the intersection of South Pearl and State streets, Albany Police spokesman Steven Smith said.

He said Backus allegedly picked up the cat by the tail and struck its head against the concrete four or five times. Backus then placed the cat, which was allegedly lying injured in the road after being hit by a car, in a city garbage can, Smith said.

Backus was arraigned Wednesday in city court and bail was set at $15,000, but a city court judge released Backus on his own recognizance.

Retired Fire Lieutenant Billy Mills was driving past the home in Bowie when he saw smoke.  Suspecting that a structure was on fire, he pulled over and followed the smoke.  He arrived at the residence just as fire crews showed up to respond to a person trapped inside.

Mills began performing a “360 check” of the house, and found a black lab “frantically scurrying about the backyard,” according to Prince George’s County Fire Department Spokesperson Mark Brady.  When the dog saw Mills coming toward him, he went to the sliding glass doors and barked continuously, looking inside.

Mills peered inside and saw an immobile woman on her hands and knees.  He rushed inside and escorted the woman out into her backyard.  Mills and her neighbor Hugh Owens, a former volunteer fire chief, then brought to the front yard to receive medical attention for smoke inhalation and burn injuries.

Firefighters did their best to contain the flames, but the house has been determined to be unsafe and unlivable.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Though the woman’s injuries were not deemed to be life-threatening, had her loyal dog not alerted Mills, she may have succumbed to smoke inhalation in a moment’s time.

New Year’s Day Police Dog Dies

Beloved Police Dog Passes Away On New Year’s Day

A Beloved Police Dog has passed away just 12 days into his retirement, leaving his partner of 7 years heartbroken.  ‘Hondo‘, a beautiful German Shepherd who worked with Vancouver Police Constable Sandra Glendinning, passed away on Tuesday afternoon.

VANCOUVER, BC.: Jan. 2, 2013 – Vancouver Police Service Dog Hondo died Jan. 1. He was the partner of Const. Sandra Glendinning, who blogged about policing on behindtheblueline.ca, for eight years and had retired just over a week earlier. - Submitted Photo: Sandra Glendinning/Behind the Blue Line  (for story by Jennifer Saltman)

– Submitted Photo: Sandra Glendinning/Behind the Blue Line  (for story by Jennifer Saltman)

Hondo‘ had his share of health problems, but they never slowed him down much and he always came back to work ready to serve.

In 2010 he had a near fatal immune disease and he had surgery in November to remove his spleen.  The spleen had a cancerous tumour and the vet warned that when the cancer came back it would be aggressive, but Glendinning didn’t expect it this soon after he retired.

Hondo’s getting on, and it’s time for him to enjoy a very well-deserved retirement. He’s ready to crash out on the big fluffy dog bed in front of our fireplace, and to being self-assigned the job of keeping starlings off the bird feeders in our back yard,” she wrote in her blog recently.

On Monday they went for a walk together and Hondo was his usual enthusiastic self.

But on Tuesday that changed she wrote, “Hondo was propped on his forelegs, labouring for breath. It was clear he had suffered a catastrophic setback — he made a soft cry with every breath. It was time.  My dear, sweet dog, my faithful partner since 2005 was leaving me.”

Police Dogs and their handlers grow very close as they both live and work together and trust each other with their lives every day, so for Glendinning it is like losing a member of her family.

Hondo was a treasured member of the department who loved to chase bad guys and track scents, and will remembered for his devotion both to his job and his partner.

Chris Packham Slams ‘Puerile’ Abuse of Animals on I’m a Celebrity

Bushtucker Trials are a ‘Farce’ because ‘Venomous’ Creatures are Disabled to Protect Celebrities.

Chris Packham

NATURALIST Chris Packham has attacked the ITV reality show I’m a Celebrity for its “out-dated and puerile abuse of animals”.

The Springwatch star slammed the show’s so-called ‘Bushtucker trials’, in which a hapless Z-list celebrity is chosen to perform a task – generally involving close contact with slimy, venomous or toothy animals – in return for food.

Packham called the trials a “Pathetic Farce”, noting that none of the Celebrities is ever in any danger:

“The Tiny Crocodiles have their mouths gagged, the spiders have their fangs covered or removed, the snakes are non-venomous and the whole area has been drenched in insecticide so the poor things don’t get too pestered by biting insects.”

Packham has spent his career on TV shows that celebrate wildlife. His no-nonsense views on conservation – such as his belief that pandas should be allowed to go extinct because the money could be better spent elsewhere – have won him as much respect as his refusal to dumb down the science in his programmes.

Packham said he “dreads this time of year” because of I’m a Celebrity. His own live Springwatch and Autumnwatch shows on the BBC could be described as a rather more staid form of reality TV. But Packham says it isn’t I‘m a Celebrity‘s format he minds: just the show’s “Idiotic, Out-Dated and Puerile Abuse of Animals”.

Anthony McPartlin & Declan Donnelly better known as Ant & Dec Present I’m a Celebrity..Get Me Out of Here

Referring to his own TV shows, he says: “We don’t just go for the cute and cuddly, we champion the ugly and unpopular too and I work really hard to win new audiences over to the wonder and real value of nature.”

In contrast, Packham believes I’m a Celebrity promotes “medieval-style exploitation”. He asks: “Why not flog, birch, tar and feather or hang, draw and quarter the contestants as well?

“After all, these practices date from the same periods when animal baiting was popular entertainment.”·

Man Beat Small Dog To Death

Sadistic Man Arrested For Beating A Small Dog To Death

An 18-month-old Shih Tzu is dead and a 27-year-old man is behind bars following a brutal case of animal cruelty which took place on Sunday.

According to a story published Monday in the Intelligencer, police arrested Anthony Doyle of Wheeling, W. Va. on Sunday night after a witness reported seeing him attack a small dog and discard the body in nearby weeds.

The woman who claims to have witnessed the beating told the authorities that she saw Doyle hitting the little dog on the back porch of a residence, and then:

“Dive On The Small Dog and Punch It Until It Went Limp,”

The witness correctly identified to the authorities the location of where she saw Doyle discard the young Dog’s body.

The Shih Tzu apparently belonged to another woman who became “hysterical” when she entered her apartment and discovered blood splattered on the walls from her fatally injured dog.

Police noted that Doyle was also covered in blood, and appeared to be intoxicated.

Sadistic Anthony Doyle Beat and Punched Small Dog To Death

Anthony Doyle is now facing felony animal cruelty for the dog’s death.

WHEELING – Police arrested Anthony Doyle Sunday night after he allegedly beat a small dog to death at a Wheeling Island residence and dumped its body in nearby weeds.

Ohio County Magistrate Charles Murphy on Monday arraigned Doyle, 27, of Wheeling on a felony charge of animal cruelty. As of late Monday, Doyle remained in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville in lieu of $25,000 cash bond.

According to a police report, officers went to the Island Grill parking lot around 9:30 p.m. Sunday to meet a woman who said she earlier witnessed Doyle beat the dog to death. The woman told police she heard a dog crying earlier that evening before she saw Doyle beating the animal on the back porch of a South Wabash Street residence.

About one hour later, the woman heard the dog crying again. She then saw Doyle “dive on the dog and punch it until it went limp,” the police report states. Doyle then dumped the dog’s body in a weeded area near the house, the witness told police.

Officers traveled to the scene of the alleged crime and found the deceased dog where the witness said Doyle had abandoned it. Animal control removed the dog from the scene.

The dog’s owner arrived at the scene after her downstairs neighbors called her to advise they had heard loud banging coming from her apartment.

She told officers she owned an 18-month-old Shih Tzu. After entering her home with police, the dog’s owner “went hysterical, because the house had blood spatter throughout the apartment,” the report states.

Officers found Doyle inside the apartment. His clothes were covered in blood, and he appeared to be intoxicated, police said. He reportedly denied any knowledge of how the dog had died.

The witness reportedly identified Doyle to officers as the man she had seen beating the dog. Police said Doyle had been staying at the home as a guest.

Doberman Cruelty Charges

16 Dobermans, 3 Found Dead, 13 Rescued

13 Dobermans Dogs are now in the care of the Broome County Humane Society after being rescued from terrible conditions.

The Dobermans were found trapped in crates and covered in feces and urine at 200 Shaw Road in the Town of Conklin. The Humane Society and State Police say that is the home of 61 year-old Christine Macan. Animal Cruelty Investigator Tarah Tripp says there was no visible food or water when she went inside. And, she found the remains of three other dogs that had been dead for a while. Macan has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty, which is a felony.

Tarah Tripp says, “The home was unsanitary and uninhabitable for humans and animals. All the dogs were kept in crates and extremely emaciated and had open wounds and were in need of vet care.  The smell inside the home was just overwhelming power smell of feces. The animals and dogs were covered in feces and urine burns.”

In another room, remains of other animals were found. They had been dead so long, the Humane Society couldn’t identify what they were. And, in one of the house’s windows, you can see maggots stacked up on the inside. Several hamsters and a rabbit were also rescued. It will take at least several months to nurse the dogs back to health. When healthy enough, they will be up for adoption.

The Humane Society was already at capacity before it took the Dobermans, so right now they are being housed outside. The organization is asking for the community’s help. The Humane Society says it needs monetary donations and pedigree dog food. If you’d like to help out or adopt, you can stop by its location at 2 Jackson Street in Binghamton. Dogs Just Love

Dogs Are Born Knowing How To Love, Humans Have To Learn

“Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

An easygoing animal, Irish Wolfhounds are quiet by nature. Wolfhounds often create a strong bond with their family

An easygoing animal, Irish Wolfhounds are quiet by nature. Wolfhounds often create a strong bond with their family

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, talking about the sad fact that animals’ lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him.

He said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?”

The six-year-old continued, “Well, Dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

The owner originally purchased the farm and gave the land to the sanctuary for their use, but now wants to take the land back.

The Farm Animal Sanctuary is currently home to 635 animals who may be euthanized if the campaign is not successful. Lumley, a patron of the sanctuary, says “I have been an admiring and constant supporter of the Farm Animal Sanctuary for 25 years. It has always struggled to keep its noble head above water, placing the welfare of neglected and damaged animals at the heart of its operation. This is a body blow that has left us all reeling.”

She has asked the farm owner to reconsider the decision to evict Taylor and her beloved animals. “There is nowhere for the animals to be moved to, even if they were well enough due to age and other welfare conditions to be relocated. I appeal to the good nature of the owner of the farm to show compassion and reverse the decision to evict Jane, her loyal workers and the animals they care for with such devotion. It is a cruel option to adopt in the current financial climate and with winter ahead of us.”

In an update on the sanctuary’s website, Taylor writes “Our animal and birds could face a very real threat of euthanasia. On their behalf we continue to campaign to procure a secure environment in which they can all live out their lives, we will not stop. In order to do this our legal costs are mounting and will continue to do so. We appeal to you all to please, if you can, to continue your support and to enlist the support of others. On behalf of the animals and birds here, thank you.”

Fur Farms in China

A Horrific and Shocking Look Inside Chinese Fur Farms

Animals Skinned Alive

When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms,

they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them.

When workers on these farms begin to

cut the skin and fur from an animal’s leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut.

China Fur Trade Exposed in 60 Seconds

When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals’ heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them.

Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly.

Some of the animals’ hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned.

One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera.

Before animals are skinned alive

  • The Animals are pulled from their cages and thrown to the ground
  • Workers bludgeon the animals with metal rods or slam them on hard surfaces
  • Causing broken bones and convulsions but not always immediate death.
  • Animals watch helplessly as workers make their way down the row.

Background

Undercover investigators from Swiss Animal Protection/EAST International toured fur farms in China’s Hebei Province, and it quickly became clear why outsiders are banned from visiting. There are no penalties for abusing animals on fur farms in China—farmers canhouse and slaughter animals however they see fit. The investigators found horrors beyond their worst imaginings and concluded,

“Conditions on Chinese fur farms make a mockery of the most elementary animal welfare standards. In their lives and their unspeakable deaths, these animals have been denied even the simplest acts of kindness.”

On these farms, foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals pace and shiver in outdoor wire cages, exposed to driving rain, freezing nights, and, at other times, scorching sun. Mother animals, who are driven crazy from rough handling and intense confinement and have nowhere to hide while giving birth, often kill their babies after delivering litters.

Is There a Skeleton In Your Coset?

The globalization of the fur trade has made it impossible to know where fur products come from. China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported for sale in the United States. Even if a fur garment’s label says it was made in a European country, the animals were likely raised and slaughtered elsewhere—possibly on an unregulated Chinese fur farm.

The only way to prevent such unimaginable cruelty is never to wear any fur.

Kittens Beaten with Bat

Pregnant Mom and Sons Accused of Beating Kittens With Aluminum Bat

Brooksville, Florida – A pregnant mother in Brooksville is accused of beating two kittens with an aluminum bat. The kittens’ injuries were so severe that one of them died and the other is badly hurt.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office says it happened at the Hill N. Dale Community Park at 6460 Boxwood Street in Brooksville around 7:30 p.m. Friday. But detectives say witnesses told them that 24-year-old Wilana Frazier didn’t act alone. They say she allowed her young sons to participate too. Her son’s are 5 and 8.

Four kids at the playground told detectives they watched as Frazier beat the two kittens, who were just a few weeks old. Patrick Pace, a supervisor with Hernando County Animal Services says one of his animal control officers responded and found one of the kittens “unconscious and unresponsive.”

One witness told investigators that Frazier stood by as one of her young sons tried to cut the kitten‘s neck with a stick. The witness says the boy threw the cat, then put it in a swing and kicked it repeatedly.

Witnesses also say Frazier joined in as another one of her sons beat a second kitten, doused it with water and dumped it in a trash can. That kitten died. But thanks to a little boy who rescued the other kitten, it survived.

The Surviving Kitten, Now Called 'Dexter'

Dexter, the Kitten that survived the horrendous ordeal

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office questioned Frazier and they say she denied beating the animals and said her two kids weren’t a part of it either. She’s been charged with not only animal cruelty but two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a child.

Meanwhile, Dexter is under the care of a local veterinarian now. Pace says, “Well, right now Dexter is recovering and his recovery could be long due to head trauma, head injury, you know, with swelling on the brain. It’s sort of uncertain, but stay posted. When information becomes available and Dexter’s ready to get into a new family and into a new home, we’ll make it available.”

Frazier has bonded out of jail.

Pace says the issue of unwanted kittens is huge due in part to the economy, but they have all types of programs and special services to take care of the animals and to try to find them all good homes.
